Make an impact in undergraduate special education by joining the dynamic and growing team in the School of Education, Counseling & Human Development at South Dakota State University (SDSU) as a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Special Education. We are looking for a passionate and dedicated professional to join us with experience in special education (school or district level) to create, develop, and teach undergraduate K-12 curriculum and methods courses with a primary focus on special education instruction across all grade levels.
To contribute to the SDSU strategic plan, “Pathway to Premier 2023”, the selected candidate must maintain an active research agenda, publication record, and pursue external funding in special education. They are expected to collaborate in further development of undergraduate and graduate programs in teacher education, and focus on neurodiversity, effective teaching, behavioral management, and assessment strategies to meet students’ individual needs. The Teacher Education program is CAEP accredited and offers undergraduate programming in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Special Education, Family and Consumer Sciences Education, and Agricultural Education. 
This position is a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track, benefit-eligible position with the opportunity for summer employment. The position is supervised by the Director of the School of Education, Counseling, and Human Development. RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Create an active and defined research agenda with plans for dissemination and potential for publication as well as actively seek external funding opportunities to support teaching and scholarship. 
  • Teach high quality courses that infuse assistive technologies and innovative approaches for persons with exceptionalities in various formats (face-to-face, hybrid, and online), as well as develop curriculum, and mentor student teachers.
  • Collaborate with Faculty, Staff and students from heterogeneous backgrounds in an effort to create an environment in which any individual or group feels welcomed, respected, supported, valued and able to fully participate as their authentic selves and communicate across differences.
  • Provide service to and with the program, school, college, and university committees and to the community with collaborations that include organizing families and parents, specialists, administrators, teachers, and other stakeholders to maximize the academic, emotional, and personal growth and safety of students.
  • Assist with the accreditation process for the education programs 
  • Assist with recruitment efforts.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Earned doctoral degree (PhD or Ed.D) in Special Education or a related field completed by first day of employment.
  • Minimum of three years special education teaching experience in kindergarten-12th grade.
  • Experience in, or knowledge of current, research-based methods for teaching neurodiversity, special education law, behavioral management, and assessment strategies to meet students’ individual needs.
  • Potential to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in special education 
  • Potential for developing a productive research agenda in the areas of special education.
  • Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
