Updated: 2 months ago
Location: Fairbanks, LOUISIANA
Deadline: ; Open until filled

The responsibilities of this position support the University of Alaska Fairbanks’s tripartite mission of teaching, research and creative activity, and service. The successful candidate will develop and teach undergraduate courses in Spanish/Hispanic literature, language, and cultures; conduct research and/or produce creative work; mentor, supervise, and direct undergraduate research; assist in academic advising of students; serve on department and university committees.

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures BA degree in Spanish is currently offered face to face but with an online minor possible. As the program is growing, there is openness to new directions for academic specialties and delivery modalities to be developed by the successful applicant.

To thrive in this position, the candidate should demonstrate evidence of teaching excellence at the post-secondary level in both face-to-face and online modalities, engagement in service (to their field, university, and community), and an active agenda for research/creative activity. Applicants should have strong interpersonal and communication skills to work in an environment involving a variety of cultures, backgrounds, and age levels. Experience with teaching diverse student populations is highly desirable (including first-year students, dual-enrollees, underrepresented or rural student populations, first-generation college students, veterans, and students experiencing disabilities). The department especially welcomes candidates with interests in developing experiential learning and community outreach programs.

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is a group of individuals dedicated to helping connect our local students to the wider world community. The Department offers classes in French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. We help our students acquire an important skill set: concrete language abilities and cognitive tools that they can use for the rest of their lives. Along with the building of language skills, our department also provides opportunities here in the local community that foster cosmopolitanism and international consciousness, allowing our students to more easily embrace globalism and recognize their role as citizens of the world.

Faculty at the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures educate future language teachers for Alaska and beyond. Our degrees serve the need of producing graduates that strengthen the Alaskan workforce, particularly in the area of language teaching. In this way, our work impacts not only UAF students, but also the quality of language education in the entire state.
