Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Department of Theatre within the College of Humanities, Social Sciences and Arts (CHSSA) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), seeks an outstanding faculty member for Assistant Professor of Scenic Design, nine-month tenure-track position beginning August 2024.
This Scenic Design position will teach a variety of undergraduate courses in Scenic Design and some of the department’s core courses, design and/or oversee students in creating designs for our four mainstage shows and our two Student Lab Series and oversee the team of staff and students working with them. All tenure-track faculty are expected to advise students and serve on department, college, and university committees.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Demonstrated potential for teaching excellence and scholarly productivity
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Strong preference will be given to candidates with a secondary specialty in any allied area of design or technology, including, but not limited to:
  • Sound Design and Technology
  • Multimedia Design and Technology
  • Costume Design and Technology
  • Stage Management,
  • Technical Direction
  • Production Management
  • Theatre Management
  • Departmental Administration.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of Theatre has approximately 85 majors and is looking to grow our program in Design and Technology. The Department of Theatre is housed in the Cultural Arts Building in the College of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts. We have two very well-equipped facilities; our Mainstage Theatre is a 266-seat proscenium theatre, and the SRO Theatre is a flexible venue. Lighting Inventory for both venues consists of a large number of intelligent fixtures as well ETC Control. The Audio system consists of Yamaha Mixer boards, and primarily Sennheiser microphones (both wired and wireless). The Multimedia system consists of Barco and Sony Projectors, Sony cameras (PTZ and handheld) and Watchout servers and show controls. The scene shop houses wood and metal fabricating equipment. Scenic automation (Pushstick and Revolver) is by Creative Conners.
The Department of Theatre has been traditionally well funded which has allowed us the opportunity to secure academic and production support technology for training our students for workforce viability post-graduation. The College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts (CHSSA) is home to 14 academic departments and offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs including the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music, Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, and Master of Public Administration as well as combined bachelor’s/master’s degree programs in Spanish and English. The CHSSA also houses the Gender Studies and Research Center, an interdisciplinary and intersectional community of students, scholars, and advocates committed to social justice and equity.
In addition, the CHSSA offers a full complement of minors including interdisciplinary minors such as Africana studies, American studies, Asian studies, classical studies, European studies, forensic science, journalism, Latin American studies, medical humanities, Middle East and Islamic studies, Native American studies, and women and gender studies. Undergraduate certificates for professional writing and publishing, as well as a number of post-baccalaureate certificates such as conflict management and resolution, emergency and disaster management, forensic science, science and medical writing, women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, and Hispanic studies are a part of the college’s offerings.
The CHSSA contributes significantly to the curriculum that comprises UNCW’s University Studies Program, through which all undergraduates gain a foundation in the liberal arts and develop the transferable skills essential for life in the twenty-first century. The CHSSA strives in its undergraduate programs and in its University Study offerings to nurture creative thinking, intellectual curiosity, diversity and inclusion, and academic integrity in students while providing them with a solid foundation of knowledge in their chosen fields. Graduate programs in the CHSSA are designed to develop intellectual competence and to prepare the student for careers in business, industry, government, teaching or for further study at the doctoral level.
