Job Description

Idaho State University and the College of Arts and Letters at Idaho State University invite applications for an Assistant Professor of Resilience Social Science beginning August 2024. This position is linked to a recently awarded National Science Foundation Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research Infrastructure Improvement (NSF-EPSCOR) program, entitled “Idaho Community-engaged Resilience for Energy-Water Systems” (I-CREWS), which will facilitate community-engaged research with Tribal Nations and other communities in Idaho to evaluate, model, and develop future scenarios for energy-water systems under various types of environmental, technological, and social change.

We seek applicants with expertise in community-engaged research and whose research interests are broadly focused on resilience, adaptation, and vulnerability to changing social, environmental, and technological systems. We are interested in candidates from a broad range of disciplines, including geography, sociology, political science, or anthropology. While we are open to a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches, candidates with experience and expertise in working with community partners to develop future scenarios and combining qualitative and quantitative methods are particularly encouraged to apply. In addition, we are particularly interested in applicants who can contribute to the diversity of our academic community through their research, teaching, and service, and who have demonstrated experience working as partners in education and research with Tribal Nations.

The selected candidate’s tenure track home will be in the department most relevant to their disciplinary expertise in the College of Arts and Letters, and they will be expected to participate in grant activities. Their teaching load will be 1-1 for the first two years of the position, and 3-3 thereafter. Candidates must be able to teach core and elective courses in their departmental home. As a college, we pride ourselves on being a community of scholars who make meaningful, professional contributions to our disciplines, departments, university, and community. This includes being passionate about providing outstanding learning opportunities for our students, many of whom are first-generation college students from Idaho. We also pride ourselves on our commitment to working collaboratively with other members of the department to achieve university goals to meet our collective mission. Our goal in the College of Arts and Letters is to work together in putting students first, and we expect all our faculty to embrace this core value.
