Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | The UNC-Chapel Hill School of Government is the nation’s preeminent university-based hub for training, consulting, and impactful scholarship aimed at local and state government. Since 1931, the School’s mission has been to improve the lives of North Carolinians through practical scholarship that empowers citizens and public officials to understand and enhance state and local government. Each year the School offers over 200 courses, webinars, and specialized conferences tailored to cater to the diverse needs of more than 12,000 public officials, helping them navigate the complexities of public service. In addition to our renowned training programs, the School operates a nationally ranked Master of Public Administration program, available both on campus and online. We cultivate the next generation of public servants, equipping them with the knowledge and skills essential for impactful governance. The School also supports a wide variety of entrepreneurial and innovative initiatives aimed at topics including public leadership, criminal justice, technology, environmental finance, and community development. These practical research and advisory centers raise the bar for what government can achieve across North Carolina. |
Position Summary | The UNC School of Government seeks an attorney with a commitment to public service, a desire to teach, and a passion for legal research and writing to serve as our newest Assistant Professor of Public Law & Government. This tenure track position will focus on municipal law, necessitating close collaboration with municipal attorneys, elected city council members, town managers, and other local government officials across North Carolina to help them deliver more effective and efficient services to our state. In this challenging role, the selected candidate will have the opportunity to advise local governments on their authority and obligations under state and federal law, to develop and deliver legal training to hundreds of local officials each year, and to produce high-quality, high-impact municipal law scholarship. The candidate will develop and share expertise on crucial legal topics such as the sources and limits of local government authority, municipal liability, government transparency, and local government structure. The person who fills this important position will make a substantial impact on the future of local government in our state. Every consultation with a public official, every class taught, and every piece of scholarship published by the new faculty number will contribute to the School’s 90-year legacy of improving North Carolina through better governance. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | J.D., excellent writing skills, strong academic background, and a demonstrated commitment to public service required. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Five or more years of experience in local government law. |
