Primary Purpose of Department
With close to 40 primary faculty members, more than 250 undergraduate majors and 70 graduate students, a masters’ program with several concentrations (including mathematics education), and a robust Ph.D. program, the Department remains one of the largest and most diverse departments in the College of Science. Currently, the department is home to five tenure-track and two full-time non-tenure track faculty in mathematics education. These faculty teach courses within the department and advise students in both the master’s program and the Ph.D. program in Curriculum and Instruction (with a concentration in Mathematics Education) in the College of Education. They regularly interact with colleagues in the College of Education and the Center for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education (CSTEM).

Description of Work

Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education starting August 2024. Responsibilities include establishing and maintaining an active research program in mathematics education. Seek external funding Teach undergraduate courses for K-12 pre-service teachers (both content and methods). Support the Math Pathways initiative Teach graduate courses for the master’s and doctoral students. Provide service to the department, the university, and the profession.
Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience
Required Qualifications include a doctoral degree in mathematics education, or equivalent. At least 18 hours of graduate mathematics or statistics content coursework, or equivalent. Demonstrated expertise in mathematics education. A commitment to establishing a productive research program. A commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels to a diverse student body. Preferred Qualifications include research experience in mathematics education at the undergraduate level K-16 teaching experience or equivalent teaching experience. Evidence of potential to obtain external funding.
