Assistant Professor of Mathematical Sciences, Lewis & Clark College Located in Portland, Oregon, Lewis & Clark College is a small liberal arts college with 2,100 undergraduates. We invite applicants with expertise in the mathematical sciences, broadly defined, to join our department of teacher-scholars as we work to foster a diverse community of students and faculty, where everyone is welcomed and encouraged to engage deeply with the practice, passion, and context of mathematical inquiry. The College is committed to preparing students for leadership in an increasingly interdependent world, and affirms the educational benefits of diversity. (See http://www.lclark.edu/dept/about/diversity.html ). This is one of seven tenure-track assistant professor positions the college seeks to fill this year, four of which are in STEM fields. We encourage applicants from all fields of mathematics and statistics. Applicants with demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring students from underserved groups and who are interested in teaching statistics, teaching our first year seminar course, conducting undergraduate research, or contributing to interdisciplinary programs on campus, are especially encouraged to apply. Our faculty teach five courses per academic year, including participation in the College’s general education program, maintain an active research program, and advise students with varied backgrounds from across the US and around the globe. The college provides a paid pre-tenure junior sabbatical, mentoring, and professional development support. Our current department faculty consists of one statistician, four mathematicians, and four computer scientists who collaborate to offer courses in mathematics, statistics, and computer science. Approximately 40 students per year graduate with majors in mathematics, computer science, and a hybrid major called computer science and mathematics. In addition to minors in mathematics and computer science, the college recently added a minor in data science and a concentration in cybersecurity. Faculty are active researchers, with a strong tradition of mentoring undergraduates to pursue open problems in the mathematical sciences. Our collegial and interdisciplinary setting provides the opportunity to enrich teaching, research, and mentorship with broad expertise. A complete application must include a cover letter which describes your interest in joining Lewis & Clark College, your research interests, your teaching philosophy, your preparation to teach and mentor students from diverse backgrounds, and a description of the ways you can contribute to a culture of equity and inclusion on our campus. We also require a curriculum vitae, evidence of teaching effectiveness, a sample of scholarship (which may be work in progress), graduate transcripts, and three letters of recommendation (uploaded separately by your recommenders). Materials may be addressed to department chair Liz Stanhope and must be submitted via Interfolio apply.interfolio.com/108483. Click “Apply” to create your free account. Review of applications will begin on November 1st and continue until the position is filled; semi-finalists will be interviewed in December 2022 or January 2023 via Zoom. We anticipate on-campus interviews for finalists will occur in February. A Ph.D. in mathematics, statistics, or a related field is required at the time of appointment. Lewis & Clark College will conduct a background check at the time an offer is made.
