The Department of History at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a tenure-track position in the field of Late Imperial/Modern Chinese history.

This is a tenure-track position with appointment at the assistant professor level, to begin in fall 2024. Possible subfields include, but are not restricted to, environmental history, transnational history, human rights, ethnic minorities, borderlands, public health, medicine, science, technology, and public policy.

This position is one of four positions in a cluster hire in Asian Studies.  UMBC is searching in 2023-2024 for Asian studies specialists in Ancient Studies, History, Philosophy, and Political Science. Faculty hired as part of the cluster hire will have opportunities to collaborate across disciplines and develop alongside a cohort of new faculty members with an interest in Asian Studies.  Though the new faculty members will be housed in their respective academic departments, they will also be affiliate faculty in and contribute to the success of the interdisciplinary Asian Studies Program at UMBC through their course offerings, participation in research seminars, and engagement with Asia-related programming on campus.

The Ph.D. is required; teaching experience is preferred. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to research and publication in the field; possess strong Chinese archival ability and bilingual (Chinese-English) language expertise; and be able to offer broad and specialized courses at the undergraduate and M.A. levels.
