The Department of Modern and Classical Languages at George Mason University invites applications from qualified candidates for a tenure-track appointment in Korean at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning in Fall 2023.

About the Department:

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages (https://mcl.gmu.edu/about-the-department ) is at the center of the multilingual and global community that distinguishes George Mason University. The Department offers a major and minor in many languages, including Korean. The Korean Studies Program (https://mcl.gmu.edu/about-the-department/korean ) proliferates in its academic scope and students’ learning by engaging in transnational collaboration with Mason Korea (https://masonkorea.gmu.edu ), other units of the university, and local Korean American communities. 
Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to actively engage in research in Korean Studies focusing on visual culture and film studies, teach and mentor undergraduate students, and participate in services at the department level and beyond. Candidates may work in various areas, including but not limited to film, television, visual art/culture, animation, digital media, video games, and webtoon. Their research is expected to further our department’s commitment to developing Korean Studies curricula by introducing approaches incorporating Korean language and literature with film art, media studies, and visual culture.
Required Qualifications:

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Korean Studies, film and media studies, or related disciplines by the beginning of the appointment. Candidates also must demonstrate native or near-native fluency in Korean to develop and teach upper-division and advanced language and culture core courses in Korean within the Korean Studies curriculum. Qualified candidates will be those possessing an emerging record of high-quality research that demonstrates the potential for excellence and those who can demonstrate strong potential for outstanding teaching contributions at the undergraduate level.
Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates with teaching experiences who can teach students for upper-division language and culture core courses of the Korean Studies curriculum are preferred. Demonstrative effective teaching is particularly desirable. We are interested in candidates who have advising experiences for undergraduate students. We are also particularly interested in candidates who can contribute to a collegiate environment that fosters interdisciplinary collaborations, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
