About the Department
The Department of Applied Ecology is a vibrant and productive unit within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and offers a supportive, collaborative, and inclusive academic setting. Faculty strengths are in the areas of ecology, fisheries, aquaculture, conservation biology, environmental toxicology, and related fields. Research in these fields drives a strong, well-funded graduate program, leaders in effective extension and outreach, and graduate and undergraduate mentoring, teaching, and advising. The Department hosts the U.S. Geological Survey’s NC Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and the Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center, the NC Agromedicine Institute, and the faculty of NC State University’s Center for Marine Sciences and Technology. Resources available include Grinnells Aquatic Facilities, Fish Barn, and Pamlico Aquaculture Facility. We offer graduate degrees in Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology as well as concentrations in Ecology and Evolution and Aquatic Sciences and Aquaculture in the Biology Graduate Program.

Essential Job Duties
The Department of Applied Ecology invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in freshwater fish ecology. We seek candidates who conduct innovative, quantitative research that develops and applies ecological principles to address issues related to freshwater fish conservation and management.
The successful applicant will:
  • Build on departmental strengths in aquatic ecology, marine and freshwater fish ecology, organismal ecology, conservation, and management to develop a robust, externally funded research program.
  • Have the opportunity to develop collaborations with outside cooperators (e.g., the USGS North Carolina Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, the Center for Applied Aquatic Ecology, the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences Aquatic Plant Management Program, the Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Biology Program, the USGS Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center, NC Museum of Natural Sciences, NC Wildlife Resources Commission).
  • Teaching responsibilities include an undergraduate course at the intersection of fish ecology and human dimensions (e.g. Fisheries Science/Management), a graduate course in the candidate’s area of expertise, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Conduct extension activities related to outreach and engagement of fisheries and conservation (e.g. pond management) in North Carolina and related areas.

    Minimum Education and Experience
    • A Ph.D. in Ecology or a relevant field.
    Other Required Qualifications
    • Ability to work with state, federal, or other management agencies.
    • Evidence of teaching and mentoring experience.
    • Ability to communicate science to all audiences.
    • Evidence of acquiring research funding.
    • Peer-reviewed publications in freshwater fish ecology.
    • Commitment to strengthening work environments that are accepting and foster belonging within the Department.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Individuals with post-doctoral or related experiences.
    • Evidence of: teaching and mentoring; communicating science to various audiences; acquiring research funding; working with state, federal, or other management agencies.
    • Experience teaching fisheries science or other fish ecology or management courses.
