The University of Pittsburgh’s Department of French and Italian seeks a tenure-stream Assistant Professor of French (Black African Studies) with a specialization in Francophone sub-Saharan Africa. Applicants must work firmly in one of the following of our department research networks: gender and sexuality; film and media. The teaching load is four courses per year at the graduate and undergraduate level. Our hire will contribute to other units at the university related to African studies (e.g. African Studies Center, Africana Studies). Courses will include graduate seminars in Black African studies as well as French undergraduate courses on the literature/culture/film of Francophone Africa and broad general education courses (taught in English) on Black Africa.

Must have a PhD degree in African Cultural Studies or related field.

Must have an active research profile as well as experience with or knowledge of planning and executing courses of their own design in French and in English; actively engaging in student outreach initiatives; and using course management technology (e.g., Canvas).

Must also have demonstrated excellence in teaching (as measured through student evaluation of teaching surveys); an active interest in field-related research; and native or near-native fluency in French (reading, writing, speaking).

Experience can be concurrent.
