Position Summary
The Assistant Professor of Experiential Education will act as lab program manager, and will oversee design and delivery of inquiry-based lab activities throughout the Biology curriculum. They  will focus lab activities on developing the core competencies required for biology careers using principles of inclusive pedagogy and will conduct research to pilot innovative interventions and evaluate student outcomes. To foster effective delivery of the curriculum, the Assistant Professor of Experiential Education will develop a GTA training program and manage two Lab Coordinators who support the GTAs in implementing teaching practices that foster student success and promote inclusive lab environments.

Ph.D. in Biology, Biology Education, or related discipline
Broad knowledge of biological sciences
3 or more years teaching experience in undergraduate biology courses
Expertise in research methods and data analysis

    Essential Duties


    Job Duty Category Teaching and curricular development
    Duty/Responsibility
    Oversee and update undergraduate lab curriculum. Lead the development of revised learning objectives, new activities, assessments, and updated course materials in collaboration with LIFE leadership, other faculty, and lab coordinators. Test new experimental protocols and guide implementation of curriculum into operational practice.
     
    Create program structure to promote effective pedagogy by GTAs. Lead pre-semester GTA introductory workshops and welcome events, and develop GTA training materials and evaluation plan. Collaborate with Lab Coordinators to implement GTA training and feedback. 
     
    Work collaboratively in developing policies and procedures that ensure safe and inclusive learning environments and foster intellectual integrity.
     
    Continually update lab materials and GTA training to ensure lab curriculum fosters excellence in diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. Refine based on analyses of student outcomes, research advances in inclusive pedagogy, and universal design for learning.

    Job Duty Category Administration and Program Management
    Duty/Responsibility
    Supervise two lab coordinators to promote consistency across courses and effective implementation of updated curriculum.
     
    Oversee and coordinate the hiring process and operational structure for GTAs, undergraduate learning assistants, and work study students supporting course logistics. Supervise directly the students participating in courses coordinated by the Lab Program Manager to prepare equipment, reagents, and materials for lab delivery.
     
    Coordinate GTA assignments and schedules, including proctoring, grading, and office hours. Communicate with Undergraduate Program Coordinator, Graduate Coordinator, Accounting staff, Associate Chair for Graduate Studies, and LIFE Core Curriculum Director to arrange logistics for GTA program each semester.
     
    Act as a liaison for GTAs regarding organizational policies and procedures as well as the appropriate implementation of Biology and LIFE curricula. On a rotating schedule, review and revise the GTA workload.
     
    Serve as point of contact for resolving lab- or student-based concerns, problems, or questions. 
     
    Coordinate online course management for Biology and LIFE labs to create course sections, course materials, and electronic gradebooks in the learning management system. Oversee grade delivery to lecture instructors or Aries. Archive and maintain electronic grade records per CSU grading procedures.
     
    Manage the ordering of reagents and equipment for the Biology and LIFE laboratories, including preparation of student tech fee requests, use of student course fees, and revisions to course fees. Collaborate with Department accounting staff to implement electronic purchasing and accounting protocols for use by all lab coordinators.
