Description of Work Unit
The Ethnic Studies Department critically examines the interlocking forces of domination that are rooted in socially constructed categories of gender, sexuality, class, race, ethnicity and disability. Our faculty and researchers are committed to theoretical, empirical, qualitative, textual, and community‐based research, pedagogy, service, and outreach. Utilizing interdisciplinary, international, and comparative approaches, we challenge paradigms that systematically marginalize the experiences of diverse populations. In doing so, we bring to bear issues of power, privilege, and social justice pertinent to aggrieved groups in the United States and abroad. We are especially committed to nurturing civic‐minded and culturally informed students who strive to strengthen the communities in which they reside. In support of the land‐ grant mission of Colorado State University, the Department engages with communities on and off campus in order to affect meaningful change in public policy and social life.

Position Summary
We are seeking candidates with specialties in Black Feminist Studies, Black Queer Studies, or Black Disability Studies. We invite scholars whose work provides original ways of understanding intersectionality regarding theorizations of Blackness, interrogations of anti-Blackness, Black social movements, social justice, and activism.
The applicant must demonstrate potential for excellence in research and scholarship in African American Studies; potential for excellence in teaching and advising; potential for excellence in service and outreach; and strong interpersonal and communication skills. Qualified applicants must be able to teach Black Feminism and develop Black or African American Studies courses.
Successful applicants are expected to build upon our strengths in interdisciplinary research activities and engaged scholarship that is grounded in activism and life experience. Evidence of interest in teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate African American and other underrepresented student populations is highly desired. 
The successful candidate will be expected to teach four courses per year, including graduate and undergraduate courses, mentor students, have an active research agenda, and engage in outreach and service with African American communities.

Required Job Qualifications
Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies or related field at the time of appointment. 
 
Specialties in Black Feminist Studies, Black Queer Studies, or Black Disability Studies.
Must be able to teach Black Feminism and develop Black or African American Studies courses that are focused on the social sciences.
 
The potential for a promising record in scholarship/research in African American Studies.
Preferred Job Qualifications
Expertise in critical race theory, theories of Anti-Blackness, reproductive justice, anti-colonial and decolonial approaches to African American Studies, the social science of race and racism, and other contemporary critical perspectives on state-sanctioned violence and scientific racism.
Evidence of interest in teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate African American and other underrepresented student populations is highly desired.

Essential Duties


Job Duty Category Teaching and Instruction
Duty/Responsibility
The candidate will be expected to teach four courses per year, including graduate and undergraduate courses, to mentor students. Applicants must be able to teach part of the existing curriculum in Ethnic Studies as well as develop new course content based on his/her research specialty. In addition to undergraduate and graduate-level teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research methods useful to ethnic studies scholars
