The Philosophy Department at the University of Rhode Island invites applications for a tenure track faculty member (starting in Fall 2024) specializing in Environmental Philosophy. Additional AOCS are open, but the department is looking for candidates with teaching and/or research interests that align with departmental growth areas, including Modern, Social/Political, and Legal Philosophy. We are looking for an active scholar, a skilled teacher, and a colleague who is committed to service (to the department, the university, and the discipline). Candidates must have a PhD in Philosophy prior to appointment with experience teaching a range of undergraduate courses in line with their areas of expertise and need to have an active research agenda. Additionally, the department welcomes prior experience in grant writing (either individually or collaboratively.)
Our successful candidate will demonstrate the capacity to teach a range of classes across our undergraduate curriculum, including lower division and upper division courses, as well as courses in URI’s General Education program. In addition, the candidate will develop and teach courses in Environmental Philosophy and, in line with the goals of the College of Arts and Sciences, will have the opportunity to develop and teach new courses in Philosophy and, in collaboration with other departments, to engage with philosophical issues in other fields across campus.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop and deliver introductory and advanced undergraduate courses in environmental philosophy and will contribute more generally to the undergraduate teaching mission of the department and to URI’s general education program in a full-time capacity (currently 3/3, although the administration is working to reduce FT teaching loads). Additionally, our colleague will engage in scholarly research; will advise and mentor students; and will engage in department level professional service.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications:

1. Ph.D. in Philosophy at time of appointment (Fall 2024.).
2. Demonstrated experience in course development and delivery in Environmental Philosophy and in introductory level Philosophy courses.
3. An active research program in Environmental Philosophy.
4. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations, including first generation and second career students.
5. Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:

1. Demonstrated evidence of teaching excellence/innovation.
2. Demonstrated evidence of seeking and securing funding for research or creative work.
3. Demonstrated evidence of fostering collaboration (in teaching, research, and/or service) with colleagues from other disciplines.
4. Experience with teaching technologies, such as working with a LMS such as Brightspace, with online teaching, etc.
