Assistant Professor of English

Updated: 2 months ago
Location: Valdez, ALASKA
Deadline: ; Open until filled

To thrive in this role, candidates will have formal instructional experience at the postsecondary level in the area of English composition, literature, creative writing, and closely related fields. Successful applicants will have the ability to develop and assess curriculum in the humanities and to work collectively with a small interdisciplinary faculty. They will also need to demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and integrity when working with colleagues and students, to communicate effectively, and to develop positive relationships within the college and the communities served by PWSC.

Due to the small size of the institution and usual interdisciplinary teaching assignments, additional graduate coursework or degrees in Communications or other humanities, particularly related to literature, languages, and creative writing, is strongly preferred. Knowledge of educational assessment and the ability to lead these efforts, as well as experience delivering instruction, training, or presentations to secondary students, community groups, or other non-traditional audiences is highly desirable.

PWSC serves an expansive geographic region in Alaska and beyond. The ability to develop and instruct quality face-to-face and distance courses through a variety of delivery methods, including synchronous and asynchronous means, is expected. This instructor may be asked to teach college courses to local secondary students dually enrolled at PWSC.

Ongoing curriculum review and assessment in the areas of English and closely related disciplines will possibly be performed by this faculty member.  As Assistant Professor of English, you will also possibly serve as an advisor to one or more student honor societies and will provide occasional academic advising for general AA degree students pursuing humanities fields and maintain posted office hours.. Occasional service on college and community committees, work groups, hiring committees, is expected, as well as regular attendance of faculty meetings, convocation/in-services, and commencement ceremonies.
