Position Description Summary:
The George Washington University Data Science program invites applications for a non-tenure track assistant professor position to begin as early as Fall 2024. The successful candidates will teach graduate and undergraduate data science courses with a focus on Machine Learning and/or Deep Learning and maintain a strong research program. The duration of the appointment is three years and renewable.
The Data Science program of the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, developed through a collaborative effort between the Departments of Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Economics, Geography, and Political Science, enables students to understand data and contribute important insights in all aspects of our data-intensive society. The program provides students a deep foundation in computational and statistical methods, the latest techniques to analyze and visualize data, and the skills to apply this knowledge to real-world problems. The program prepares students for successful careers with industry, research institutions, and government organizations. The program’s location in the nation’s capital offers unique opportunities to connect with government agencies and high-tech industries for research collaboration and funding. The program offers an MS in Data Science, a graduate certificate, a BS/MS combined degree program, and a recently launched undergraduate degree.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
The new faculty member in Data Science will teach three courses each semester, including Machine and Deep Learning, and possibly Capstone courses. Other duties include: student advising, participation in committee work, mentoring students doing research and applied projects, and helping build relationships with industry and government data science professionals.
Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or other social or natural science with a focus on data science and documented experience in the application of data science to Big Data problems involving Machine and/or Deep Learning in the natural and/or social sciences.
ABD candidates will be considered but must complete all Ph.D. or Doctoral degree requirements by the date of appointment.

The successful applicant will receive start-up funding, graduate student teaching assistance, and opportunities for teaching in the summers. The Data Science program is in a high-demand field allowing opportunities for students to complete paid projects and internships and faculty to work as both private and public sector consultants.
