Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Department of Art at the University of Maryland invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Critical Studies. We seek a candidate engaged in the investigation and invention of new knowledge and research relating to contemporary issues and practices within the academic field of contemporary art theory and practice who can apply their research toward the development of a modern art theory and art practice curriculum within a major research institution.
Critical Studies is defined in this context as the confluence of art theory and artistic creation, weaving together diverse interdisciplinary perspectives from cultural, social, political, and philosophical realms. We particularly encourage candidates familiar with sub-disciplines within Critical Studies, such as (but not limited to) intersections of gender, race, sexuality, ethnicity, nationality, ability and other inequalities, as well as environmental art, and arts-centered activism. This role is ideally suited to MFA-qualified artists adept at synthesizing theory with practice, and PhD-trained scholars with experience in arts-based research and theoretical discourse within the arts.
The Department of Art is currently central to a number of interdisciplinary collaborative initiatives across the campus. These include interdepartmental undergraduate programs such as our recent partnership with the Department of Computer Science on a new major,Immersive Media Design , and a collaboration with the School of Architecture Planning and Preservation on a new minor inCreative Placemaking . The Department is further engaged with University wide initiatives such as theArts for All Initiative , focused on the confluence of Art, Technology + Social Justice, and the $30MGrand Challenges Grant program, supporting projects focused on climate change, social injustice, global health, and education disparities. The ideal candidate will have research interests and pursuits that resonate with, or capitalize on, these initiatives in addition to playing a pivotal role in enriching the undergraduate and graduate curricula within the Department of Art.
Expectations/Responsibilities
Research:
  • Maintain an active practice of scholarly or creative research with a national and international trajectory through publication, or exhibition.

Teaching:
  • Teach two undergraduate courses per semester; an introductory art theory course for majors and non-majors, as well as an upper-level art theory course for studio art majors.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate students in our Departmental Honors Program on an individual basis, and participate in a variety of group critiques with the collective Honors faculty.
  • Advise and mentor MFA students in all disciplines on an individual basis, and take part in semester reviews with the collective graduate faculty.
  • Serve as Director or committee member on MFA thesis committees.

Service:
  • Collaborate and provide leadership towards the implementation of standardized and contemporary learning outcomes within our foundations-level studio art courses by placing emphasis on the intersection of art theory concepts and studio practice.
  • Participate in the ongoing governance of the Department of Art.
