DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

The School of Engineering & Applied Sciences on the Tri-Cities campus of Washington State University (WSU) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in Computer Science. The School of Engineering & Applied Sciences (SEAS) is an integral unit within the university’s Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture. Of particular interest are applicants whose research and teaching expertise are in one or more of the following areas: cybersecurity, mobile computing/IoT, data mining, machine learning/AI, visual computing, and high-performance computing. Applications from candidates with demonstrated expertise are encouraged, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications. The successful candidate will be expected to provide outstanding teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, mentor graduate students, develop/maintain a vigorous extramurally funded research program, contribute to professional and university service, and participate broadly in the computer science curriculum.

Faculty in SEAS actively collaborate with scientist at the nearby Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), a world-class Department of Energy research enterprise that advances the frontiers of science and engineering and offers joint appointments to qualified WSU faculty. Reflecting strategic directions of SEAS, this position will contribute to the growth of computer science education and research programs on the Tri-Cities campus.  In SEAS, faculty members are empowered towards professional success.

RANK/SALARY

This is a permanent, full-time, tenure-track faculty position with a 9-month academic appointment as an Assistant Professor at the Washington State University Tri-Cities campus in Richland, WA. Additional summer teaching appointments are also possible. Annual Salary is $95,000 - $110,000 per nine-month academic year. The position will begin August 16, 2024.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct research in one or more of the targeted areas listed above through the development of a nationally and internationally recognized externally funded research program that supports graduate students and addresses problems of significant societal impact. 

  • Publish high-impact technical articles in top-tier journals and conference proceedings.

  • Develop and teach graduate and undergraduate courses in computer science, particularly in the applicant’s area of research, thereby fostering experiential learning.

  • Advise and mentor undergraduate, MS, and PhD students.

  • Contribute to advancing computer science education and research.

  • Participate in service to the department, college and/or university through committee work, recruitment, and interaction with industry.

  • Advance the college's commitment to diversity and multiculturalism among its faculty, staff, students through research, teaching, and community outreach with relevant programs, goals, and activities.

  • Collaborate with other WSU faculty and PNNL scientists, including but not limited to colleagues with interest and expertise in the applicant’s research areas.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Earned doctorate in computer science or closely related field, prior to the hire date.

  • Demonstrated specialization in one or more of the targeted research areas listed above.

  • Knowledge of relevant current subfields in the applicant’s areas of research.

  • Record of research accomplishment commensurate with rank.

  • Ability to develop an externally funded research program in the applicant’s research area.

  • Ability to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in computer science, particularly those related to the applicant’s research area.

  • Commitment to teaching excellence in undergraduate and graduate courses.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with both students and colleagues in written and verbal forms.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent communication abilities in written and verbal forms.

  • A track-record of publications in one of more of the targeted research areas.

  • Minimum of one year of post-doctoral research in one of the targeted research areas.

  • Demonstrated evidence of expertise in the preparation of compelling research proposals.

  • Ability to initiate novel research directions that advance the field of the applicant’s research area.

  • Identify emerging technologies and maintain deep awareness of the state of the art in the applicant’s research area.

  • Interest in international collaborations in education and research.

  • Ability to establish collaborations with other universities, national laboratories, and industry.

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110 , the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
