Position Summary | Governors State University College of Arts and Sciences announces a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Secondary Biology Education beginning as early as the Spring 2023 semester. The Division of Science, Mathematics and Technology offers undergraduate majors and minors, graduate degrees, and post-baccalaureate and graduate certificates. The successful candidate will join a dynamic faculty, working collaboratively between the education and science programs. As a Minority Serving Institution we seek candidates with outstanding teaching skills, interest in advising non-traditional and diverse student populations, evidence of potential scholarship consistent with tenure-track expectations, and professional service via projects, committees or other leadership roles. This full-time position will have the following responsibilities:
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Biology OR a Ph.D. /Ed.D. in Education. An M.A. or M.S. in the reciprocal field is highly recommended, but comparable experience will be considered. The candidate must hold a secondary teacher license and have a subfield or extensive training and experience in teacher education. The ideal candidate will teach undergraduate courses in Biology/Chemistry and Secondary Science teaching methods, and must have advanced knowledge in educational technology, curriculum design, and best instructional practices for teaching diverse learners. Preferred qualifications include familiarity with the Council for Accreditation for Educator Preparation (CAEP), National Science Teaching Association (NSTA), and edTPA or similar performance assessment(s). Candidates should also have a knowledge of teaching reading in the content area, social emotional learning, and teaching English language learners. In order to be a leading candidate in this search, in addition to the aforementioned requirements, the candidate must be fluent in the English language, be able to communicate well, demonstrate outstanding potential for excellence in teaching through a successful interview and/or classroom demonstration and be experienced in the use of innovative curricular approaches that are experiential, student-centered, and inquiry-based. They should also be prepared to advise students, maintain a program of scholarship, and provide meaningful service. Though the primary teaching assignment will be on campus on weekdays and evenings, the person hired in this position may be required to teach weekends, online, or at off-site locations. Candidates should submit a cover letter; a statement describing current scholarship and research interests; a statement describing teaching experience and teaching philosophy; curriculum vitae; unofficial transcripts for all graduate and undergraduate degrees; evidence of teaching licensure; and contact information for three references. Minimum Qualifications | 1. Ph.D. in Biology, OR a Ph.D./Ed.D. in Education; all degree requirements must be completed by December 31, 2022. 2. Hold a secondary teacher license and have a subfield or extensive training and experience in teacher education. 3. Ability to teach undergraduate courses in Biology and Secondary or Middle School Science teaching methods. 4. Evidence of advanced knowledge in educational technology, curriculum design, and best instructional practices for teaching diverse learners 5. Demonstrated knowledge of teaching reading in the content area, social emotional learning, and teaching English language learners 6. Evidence of proficiency in teaching ability. 7. Evidence of potential for strong record of scholarship. |
Preferred Qualifications | 1. M.A. in Education (if Ph.D. in Biology) or M.S. in Biology (if Ph.D./Ed.D. in Education) 2. Experience with non-traditional, first-generation, and/or traditionally underrepresented student populations. 3. Experience teaching undergraduate courses in Biology and Secondary or Middle School teaching methods, 4. Familiarity with the Council for Accreditation for Educator Preparation (CAEP), Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and edTPA or similar performance assessment(s). 5. Experience with teaching online courses. 6. Demonstrated record of scholarship through publication and conference presentations. 7. Demonstrated ability to infuse course content with scholarship related to underrepresented and marginalized groups. |
