Unit Mission Statement
Applied Science is an interdisciplinary department focused on excellence in research, scholarship, and Ph.D. education in fields that include applied mathematics, biophysics, biochemistry, data science, neuroscience, materials science, and engineering. We provide customized training that enables students from diverse educational backgrounds to solve complex scientific and technical problems studied by Applied Science core faculty as well as affiliated faculty from the William & Mary main campus and nearby national labs, other institutions of higher education, and industry. Applied Science always has been a hub of innovation and a long-term supporter of cross-disciplinary STEM programs like Computational and Applied Mathematics (CAMS), Engineering Physics and Applied Design (EPAD), Neuroscience, and Data Science. Our research and training programs embody the teacher-scholar model and address real-world problems.
Position Summary
The Department of Applied Science (APSC) at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, seeks applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in Materials Science & Engineering (MSE). Appointment will begin August 10, 2024. We are interested in individuals with research and teaching expertise in experimental MSE. Ideally, the research will be related to ongoing efforts in APSC, including Biomaterials, Bioengineering, Neuroscience, Peptide Research, and Mathematical Modeling. An orientation toward data-driven materials design and discovery is very welcome. Exceptional applicants from all areas of MSE will be considered.
Duties include research, teaching, and service to the University. Successful applicants must possess the skills to establish and sustain a vibrant, externally funded research program that integrates into ongoing research activities in APSC and at William & Mary, and that inspires a highly motivated Ph.D. student body and undergraduate students. Collaborations with faculty in the Data Science department are welcome.
Teaching expectation is 1 course per semester. The applicant is expected to develop and teach compelling courses related to MSE and other lecture and seminar-style courses. These courses will also serve under­graduate students of other programs, such as the Engineering Physics and Applied Design (EPAD) program jointly operated with the physics department, or Data Science students.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in MSE or a related field at the time appointment begins, August 10, 2024.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience in acquiring extramural funding is preferred, as are successful teaching and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate research. Evidence of scholarly achievement or demonstrated potential as a scholar. Postdoctoral research experience is desirable.
