The Department of Agricultural Sciences (AS) in the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Life Sciences (CAFLS) at Clemson University is seeking to fill a 9-month, tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level. The position is a 100% Research appointment focused on fruit and vegetable marketing and production. The preferred candidate will have experience in specialty crop marketing and production economics. Strong applied econometric skills are also desirable. Clemson University is an R1 Land Grant university and U.S. News and World Report has consistently ranked Clemson University among the nation’s top 25 public universities.

 

Clemson’s Agribusiness program is housed in the Department of Agricultural Sciences and was established in 2013 and has grown rapidly in nine years. The Agribusiness program consists of 8 faculty, 1 lecturer, and approximately 160 undergraduate students (https://www.clemson.edu/cafls/agricultural-sciences/index.html ). The Agribusiness program recently re-established a Master of Science degree in Applied Economics and Statistics that currently has 10 students and expects to annually enroll 8-10 students. 

 

The successful candidate is expected to develop a nationally recognized, innovative, and extramurally funded research program in fruit and vegetable marketing and production.  Research responsibilities should focus on issues important to the fruit and vegetable industry including but not limited to block chain, market channels, consumer demand, and technology use within the production, marketing, packing, and grading of products. The successful candidate will collaborate with other faculty in the AS department, CAFLS departments, and faculty housed in Clemson’s off-campus Research and Education Centers to promote the South Carolina agricultural economy. The successful candidate will also work with stakeholders and commodity/industry groups in South Carolina, the region, and around the country to identify areas of importance to stakeholders. There is an expectation of excellence in grantsmanship, timely communication of research findings through publication in peer-reviewed journal articles, and active participation in training and mentoring graduate students. Additional responsibilities include communicating findings effectively with stakeholders and serving on department, college, and university academic committees, and professional committees. 

 

The position is located at Clemson University’s Sandhill Research and Education Center (REC) in Columbia, South Carolina, a two hour drive from the main campus.  The Sandhill REC is a 600-acre tract of land centrally located in the state near major fruit and vegetable production. (https://www.clemson.edu/cafls/research/sandhill/ ).  The Center is an integral part of Clemson University’s Public Service and Agriculture programs including agricultural, wildlife and forestry research and demonstrations, Agribusiness Extension, an incubator farm program, the Sandhill Farmers Market, and the Richland County Cooperative Extension Service office.  The Sandhill REC is home to the Agribusiness Center that conducts applied research and Extension programming related to production economics, marketing, policy and farm management for major crops and value-added ventures.

Required qualifications: A Ph.D. degree in Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness, Economics, or closely related field with a strong focus in agribusiness is expected at the time of employment. The selected candidate must have knowledge of marketing and production issues confronting the agricultural economy and possess the interest and ability to be responsive to grower and stakeholder needs. Excellent written and verbal communication is required.

 

Preferred qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates with documented ability to secure external funding to support an active research program, a record of high-quality peer-reviewed journal publications, and a dedicated interest (and/or demonstrated excellence) in applied research and dissemination. Experience in working as an active member in multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary research settings is also preferred.
