The Department of Psychological, Health, & Learning Sciences (PHLS) at the University of Houston (UH) seeks a scholar for a tenure-track faculty appointment at the academic rank of Assistant Professor. This search is targeting scholars with research expertise in minority health and health disparities. Priority areas of study include population health aimed at creating new models of care with a focus on high-quality primary care, community-based dissemination and implementation strategies for preventing and mitigating disparities in substance use disorders and chronic diseases, and/or innovative approaches to advancing health-equity science. This appointment will primarily house in PHLS with an opportunity to affiliate with the Psychology Department, the Tilman J. Fertitta College of Medicine, the HEALTH Research Institute, and/or Population Health as expertise and interest align.
This is an exciting time at UH given the university’s health initiative, the HEALTH Research Institute, the HEALTH Center for Addictions Research and Cancer Prevention, the newly established Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine, and our close proximity to the world-renowned Texas Medical Center, all of which provide faculty with numerous opportunities for a team science approach to research. PHLS is rapidly expanding to make a collective impact on addressing health and educational disparities in our local, state, national, and international communities. To this end, we value excellence, community engagement, diversity, student success, and academic integrity. Applicants will join a PHLS program with closest disciplinary alignment: (1) Counselor Education; (2) Counseling Psychology; (3) Health; (4) Human Development & Family Sciences; (5) Measurement, Quantitative Methods, & Learning Sciences; and/or (6) School Psychology. The department is seeking outstanding candidates with an exceptional record of externally funded health research, excellence in teaching, and clear commitment to service and community engagement.
Responsibilities : Responsibilities include conducting innovative research, particularly with colleagues in home and affiliated departments, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals; securing external funding to support an interdisciplinary program of research; rigorous teaching in graduate and/or undergraduate courses; mentoring students; chairing and/or serving on doctoral committees; presenting research at professional meetings; and service to the Department, College, University, and profession.
Appointment : This is a nine-month appointment. Review of candidates will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The anticipated start date is Fall, 2024. Salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications and experience and will include benefits. Qualifications
:
Applicants for this position must hold a doctoral degree in biomedical sciences, clinical sciences, community health, endocrinology, epidemiology, neuroscience, psychology, public health, population health, or a closely related discipline. The successful candidate must demonstrate a record of innovative research published in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, developing or sustained record of significant external funding, evidence of effective teaching ability, commitment to student success, and service to the profession. A preferred qualification includes training and experience in community-based participatory research or community-engaged research. The candidate’s qualifications must be commensurate with appointment as an Assistant Professor.
