Position Description

San Francisco State University, Department of Mathematics offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Mathematics (pure or applied) or Mathematics Education beginning August 7, 2024. We seek a colleague whose research and teaching interests include any field in mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematics education or related field. We are seeking applicants with experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups. This is part of a cohort hire focused on Black and Latinx/e student success. We are looking for teacher/scholars who have an established commitment to teaching, research and/or service in and with the Black and Latinx/e community. Candidates for this position are expected to satisfy two or more of the eight Black and Latinx/e Student Success Cohort Hire criteria:

1. Training in and knowledge of historical and present-day structural racism, and practice that engages that knowledge (practice may include teaching, research, and/or service).

2. Demonstrated knowledge of challenges and barriers for Black and Latinx/e students, and evidence of strategies employed to help students overcome such barriers.

3. Evidence of employing anti-racist teaching strategies that support the learning and success of Black and Latinx students.

4. Mentors and engages Black and Latinx/e students in research, scholarship, and creative activities.

5. Evidence of research that contributes to equity, opportunities, and inclusion in higher
education.

6. Evidence of research that integrates understanding of and/or engages Black and Latinx/e communities’ challenges and structural realities.

7. Evidence of engaging in service to Black and Latinx/e populations within the discipline.

8. Evidence of service and contributions to Black and Latinx/e communities.

About the Department
The Department of Mathematics at San Francisco State University prides itself in its strong track record of excellence in research, teaching, and service. At the heart of all our efforts, we maintain a steadfast commitment to our diverse student population, 76% of whom are members of racial and ethnic minority groups, and 33% of whom are Black and/or Latinx/e. The efforts of our faculty have been recognized with 5 NSF CAREER Awards, 7 active NSF research grants, 4 other external grants, and 3 National MAA Teaching Awards. We have also received recognition for numerous programs that support Black, Indigenous, and Latinx math students, such as
BAMM, Noyce STAJES, SFSU-Colombia Combinatorics Initiative, MSRI-UP, and SF BUILD, among others.

Our department has a tradition of active collaborations between faculty across mathematics, math education, applied mathematics, and statistics, as well as numerous other departments at SFSU and beyond. We play an important role in the mathematical life of San Francisco, leading and participating in educational and outreach initiatives, and training a large percentage of the math teachers in the Bay Area. The Department of Mathematics serves the second-most students in the university, and is home to approximately 200 majors and 100 graduate students. We constantly work to improve our math courses and curriculum to better serve our diverse and talented student body, using equitable strategies supported by the math education literature. Our graduate program has a national reputation for the strength and diversity of its graduates, who go on to notable academic careers in research and teaching, become educational leaders, found and direct national programs for BIPOC students, and do innovative work in thriving industries.

The position requires developing an active ongoing scholarship program in one’s area of specialty, graduate and undergraduate teaching, mentoring and advising graduate and undergraduate students, curricular innovation, and ongoing committee and service assignments.

• Ph.D. in mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematics education or related field. Terminal degree must be completed by the first day of employment.
• Record of working and communicating effectively with colleagues and students.

The anticipated Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is:
$92,000 to $94,500 annually (12 monthly payments per academic year).
The anticipated hiring range is $7,667 to $7,875 per month.

Salary offered is commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, the California Equal Pay Act prohibits employers from paying its employees less than those of the opposite sex and/or another race or ethnicity for substantially similar work (https://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/california_equal_pay_act.htm).

Professional development funds, moving expenses, start‐up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
