Assistant Professor, Mathematics Education Position


The Virginia Tech School of Education (www.soe.vt.edu) is inviting applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position in Mathematics Education at the main campus in Blacksburg, Virginia. The position will begin in August 2024. This appointment provides a unique opportunity to join and shape a vibrant mathematics education research community situated in an increasingly diverse and globally connected university. This interdisciplinary community includes faculty from the School of Education as well as the Department of Mathematics. Our collective research spans K-16 mathematics teaching and learning. The successful candidate will have the following responsibilities: Conducting an active research agenda, teaching graduate and undergraduate mathematics education courses in both face-to-face and online environments, interacting with and advising doctoral and master’s students in mathematics education, managing and teaching courses in the secondary mathematics education program, supervising secondary student teachers, and providing service to the School, College, University, and profession. The expected/standard teaching load is four courses per academic year (two each semester), and the position requires occasional travel to attend professional meetings and conferences.

Required Qualifications

Earned doctorate in mathematics education or closely related field by appointment start date;
Undergraduate degree in mathematics (or equivalent mathematics background);
Strong potential for scholarly research in mathematics education;
Classroom-based teaching experience with middle and/or high school students (grades 6-12)


Preferred Qualifications

Graduate work in mathematics (e.g., master’s in mathematics);
Strong potential for externally funded research;
Demonstrated ability to work with and supervise preservice mathematics teachers;
Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and/or graduate mathematics education courses (online and/or face-to-face);
Evidence of tangible outcomes related to the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion;
Demonstrated ability to work with and commitment to working with culturally diverse and/or international populations;
Demonstrated ability to teach elementary mathematics methods courses;
Demonstrated ability to teach/mentor master’s and doctoral students, including chairing/serving on dissertation committees;
Experience working with mathematics specialists and/or coaches
