The School of Marine and Environmental Programs (SMEP) in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at the University of New England (UNE) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in Marine Sciences, with a focus in Marine Mammals, starting in August 2024. The successful candidate will join a collegial, engaged team of faculty and professional staff in a school offering programs in Marine Science (including Marine Biology and Oceanography tracks); Marine Affairs; Marine Entrepreneurship; Sustainable Ecological Aquaculture; Aquaculture, Aquarium Sciences, & Aquaponics; Environmental Science; Environmental Studies; and Sustainability & Business.

The School of Marine and Environmental Programs is located on UNE’s Biddeford waterfront campus, with easy access to a variety of coastal ecosystems including rocky coastlines, sandy beaches, mudflats and salt marshes. Girard Marine Science Center which has a 600,000 gallon capacity flow-through seawater system. Responsibilities
The school seeks candidates to teach undergraduate and graduate courses such as Natural History of Marine Mammals, Marine Mammal Policy, Marine Conservation, and Behavioral Ecology. The typical teaching load is the equivalent of 9 credits per semester. The successful candidate is expected to develop an active, independent research program involving undergraduate and graduate students that results in peer-reviewed dissemination of the work, and to seek external funding. Additionally, the successful candidate will also engage in curriculum development and participate in academic advising, recruiting, course and program assessment, and service to the school, college and University.
Qualifications
A doctoral degree in Marine Sciences, Marine Biology, Zoology, Biology, Oceanography or a closely related field is required at the time of appointment. Postdoctoral experience and a record of competitive grant funding is preferred. Candidates must be committed to interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship. The desired candidate will have the capacity for excellence in teaching and service, and a well-defined research program amenable to mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students.
