Job Description

The Department of Communication and Media at Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor with expertise in multimedia journalism. The position will begin in Fall 2024.

The successful candidate will teach courses in journalism such as Newswriting, Media Writing, Multimedia Journalism, and Cross-Platform Editing & Layout.  The candidate will also serve as program coordinator for the Digital Journalism minor, including curriculum planning and assessment, and as a Faculty Co-Advisor for our student news organization. We seek a person who will take an active role in shepherding the minor. The person selected will engage in scholarly activity relevant to multimedia journalism. The workload for tenure-track faculty typically consists of teaching three courses per semester and three scheduled credit hours for scholarly/creative activity per long semester. Additional workload credit may be considered in light of advisorship and/or other administrative responsibilities.

The Department of Communication and Media is a dynamic department—with students studying human relationships, analyzing film and television, creating films, practicing public relations, writing for the student newspaper, and instructing others in communication.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Journalism or a related field. Advanced ABD will be considered; degree must be conferred at the time of appointment.

  • Experience in teaching courses in journalism including, but not limited to, Newswriting, Media Writing, Multimedia Journalism, and/or Cross-Platform Editing & Layout.

  • Evidence of an active research agenda in the area of journalism and/or journalism studies.

  • Ability to work as a Faculty Co-Advisor for Island Waves, our student news organization.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a newsroom or online publication company, with candidates who have been recognized for excellence in journalism by a professional organization especially preferred.

  • Prior experience working with or as part of a student news organization will be viewed as a positive candidate attribute.

  • Scholarly activity in AEJMC and/or other academic professional organizations focused on forwarding journalism scholarship and education.

  • Ability to teach photojournalism.

  • Ability to teach media production and/or non-linear editing.

  • Familiarity with Adobe InDesign, Adobe Creative Cloud more generally, and other software associated with news production
