Job Summary
The OSU Department of Chemistry invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor (Inorganic Materials Chemistry) position.
The incumbent in this position will develop an innovative inter- or trans-disciplinary research program to revolutionize the discovery of sustainable inorganic materials for emerging applications in electronics, energy, and environment. This position includes a preferred focus on discovering next-generation materials for semiconductor industries by employing automated inorganic synthesis through solution-based routes, solid-state reactions, or thin-film deposition and using artificial intelligence/machine learning in their experimental research. The Department of Chemistry is home to a sophisticated, digitally enabled continuous flow synthesis system.
This position aligns with major strategic goals identified in the College of Science’s Strategic Plan and the Strategic Plan for Oregon State University that include strategic research investments in the areas of climate science and related solutions, clean energy technology and related solutions, robotics, and integrated health and biotechnology. This position will enhance the existing collaborations between the departments of Chemistry and Physics in the College of Science and partnerships with the College of Engineering
The primary mission of the OSU Department of Chemistry is to provide a program of undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral education in chemistry and to conduct research and scholarly activities focused on areas of chemistry important to human health, sustainable energy, and the environment. The department offers Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Chemistry and has a rapidly growing student body, including ~200 undergraduate majors and ~110 graduate students.
The College of Science provides a core instructional role at OSU, supporting the ideals of learning, discovery, and engagement that are the foundation of a land-grant university. The College embraces instruction and research in disciplines ranging from the physical, chemical, mathematical, statistical sciences to the life sciences that are based in unbiased inquiry and a dedication to discovery and innovation. Key Responsibilities
45% Instruction:
This position will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of Chemistry. The normal assignment corresponding to 45% commitment is three courses (on average one course per quarter) per academic year. A “course” is a 3 or 4-credit course that may be a lecture, a lab, or some combination thereof. This position will have responsibility for course design, the composition of the course syllabus, selection of text and other supporting materials, choice of topics and subject matter, fashioning presentations, creating assessment tools, overseeing graduate teaching assistants assigned to the course, and assigning grades. The instruction needs to follow the best practices for diversity, equity, justice, and inclusion. Compliance with University academic regulations is expected.
45% Research:
This position will conduct research in their area of specialization in such a manner that attracts national and international recognition and establishes the employee’s reputation for scholarly excellence. Such activities are expected to include but not be limited to: supervision of students and postdoctoral associates in the execution of research; publication of research results in the peer-reviewed literature; presentation of research results at scientific meetings and conferences and publication of non-refereed papers, web publications, books, and book chapters; filing patent applications; submission of grant proposals and administration of successful grants; compliance with University regulatory policies concerning grants and research.
10% Service:
Participation on Department, College, and University committees; participation in training and professional development to maintain a current knowledge of best practices in teaching, mentoring, and interacting with students; in all service roles, advancing the goals of improving diversity, equity, justice, and inclusion; participation in peer review activities; promotion of the profession through outreach and participation in professional societies.

  • Demonstrable ability or significant potential to conduct scientific research of sufficiently high quality to be published in top-tier peer-reviewed journals.

  • Relevant postdoctoral experience.
  • Relevant teaching experience in inorganic chemistry and materials chemistry. Demonstrable proficiency or significant potential to obtain external research funding.
  • Demonstrable interest in interdisciplinary communication and collaboration, including the potential for engagement in synergistic interactions with other investigators at or outside OSU.
