Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The School of Health and Applied Human Sciences (SHAHS), within the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), seeks an outstanding faculty member for an Assistant Professor, 9-month, tenure-track position in the School’s Tourism, Recreation, & Sport program beginning August 2024. The successful candidate will become one of five faculty that serve approximately 110 undergraduate Tourism, Recreation, & Sport majors. The successful candidate will be able to teach a variety of undergraduate courses in the program’s curriculum. Further, the successful candidate will conduct research, publish, write grants, advise students, and provide community engagement and professional service. The candidate may also assume key responsibilities related to the internship, practicum, and fieldwork experiences.
The Tourism, Recreation, & Sport Program at UNCW is more than 35 years old and currently offers concentrations/options in Parks and Outdoor Recreation, Sport and Recreation, and Tourism, Hospitality and Events.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Applicants must have the following qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree in Tourism, Recreation, & Sport, or a closely-related field with at least 18 hours of graduate coursework closely related to Tourism, Recreation, & Sport at the time of employment. Applicants who are ABD for the terminal degree may be considered depending on expected completion date.
  • Demonstrated potential to develop a successful research program (publications, presentations, grant activity) in one or more core Tourism, Recreation, & Sport disciplines.
  • Evidence of successful college teaching experience in a Tourism, Recreation, & Sport, or a closely-related field curriculum.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Preference will be given to candidates who have the following qualifications:
  • Tourism / Hospitality Teaching Experience: Experience teaching a variety of Tourism Management / Hospitality Management courses at the college level or with experience working in this industry.
  • Collaborative Relationships: Evidence of the ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships demonstrating effective teamwork and communication skills.
  • Commitment to Service: Demonstrated commitment to service at multiple levels, including school, college, university, community, or professional organizations, highlighting engagement with the broader community and a sense of social responsibility.
  • Applied Learning Opportunities and Global Experiences: Experience in providing students with applied learning opportunities and global experiences, such as internships, research projects, or study abroad programs, fostering real-world application of knowledge and exposure to diverse perspectives.
  • Commitment to Personal Professional Growth: Proven commitment to personal and professional growth, evidenced by participation in professional development workshops, conferences, or research initiatives, showcasing a dedication to continuous learning and improvement.

Graduates from this program serve as qualified professionals providing leisure opportunities and experiences for individuals from all walks of life to enhance their overall health, well-being and quality of life. The program faculty are highly qualified, experienced and committed to student success. The program curriculum meets the highest standards of academic rigor, professionalism and ethical conduct. Students enrolled in the program participate in faculty research, international and domestic travel opportunities and experiential, applied and service learning experiences. The program’s core values are honesty, ethical behavior, innovation, creativity, responsibility and engagement.

The SHAHS also supports a Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and a Masters of Education concentration in Physical Education and Health through the Watson College of Education.
