The Department of Finance and Management Information Systems (FNIS) of the Marilyn Davies College of Business (MDCOB), at the University of Houston- Downtown (UHD) invites applicants for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) to begin in August 2024.

The MDCOB is accredited by AACSB and enrolls more than 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The department offers a major in RMI, and majors and minors in Finance, Management Information Systems, and a minor in Economics.

The candidate must have a Ph.D. or ABD (with an expected date of completion of the degree at the time of employment) in risk management and insurance from an AACSB-accredited university and at the time of hire have scholarly academic (SA) status. Candidates with PhDs from AACSB-accredited universities in a very closely related field plus relevant work experience and coursework in Risk Management and/or Insurance may be considered. The candidate selected will have teaching responsibilities including but not limited to: Risk management and Insurance, Insurance Operations, Property/Casualty, Life and Health, Risk Management, and other courses to meet department needs. 

Candidates with professional work experience in risk management or insurance are strongly preferred. Candidates should have a proven track record in risk management, and insurance research or demonstrate an active research pipeline in RMI.

Candidates must be successful or demonstrate strong potential to conduct discipline-related research consistent with AACSB scholarly academic status are encouraged to apply. The candidate should provide evidence of experience or demonstrated potential in teaching a variety of risk management and insurance courses, The ideal candidate should demonstrate evidence of leadership or initiative. 

The position requires teaching RMI courses during the daytime, evening, and weekend hours both in person and online.  The home campus for this position is the Downtown Houston campus, but the candidate selected may also have teaching assignments at UHD’s Northwest campus. 

We are nationally recognized for insurance and risk management and have an active chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma International Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science Collegiate Fraternity.

Qualifications

 
  • Applicants must have a terminal degree in Risk Management and Insurance from an AACSB accredited business school or should be working towards one having reached the all-but-dissertation (ABD) status.  The doctorate must be completed by the date of appointment in Fall 2024.
  • Demonstrate a record of, or potential for, scholarly research and publications in discipline-related peer-reviewed journals.
  • Must be scholarly academic (at the time of employment)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of experience or demonstrated potential in teaching a variety of risk management or insurance courses
  • Evidence of taking initiative or leadership
  • Evidence of an active research pipeline or record of scholarly activity
  • Professional work experience in risk management or insurance
