Scope of Job
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor of Philosophy position beginning in the 2022-2023 academic year who specialize in diverse and critical approaches to law or law and race, broadly construed. Successful candidates will demonstrate interest and ability to lead our department’s new Pre-Law concentration by sparking student interest, ​advising, and recruiting, creating new courses, and working across disciplinary lines with other programs and departments. We are especially interested in candidates who combine their expertise in law with issues of contemporary social relevance, especially race but also health, immigration, environment, gender, sexuality, language, religion, or class. If applicable, we welcome candidates to show how their work might engage with issues of importance to the Rio Grande Valley and the U.S./Mexico border or if candidates have the ability to engage with linguistically diverse communities. Successful candidates will demonstrate research potential consistent with UTRGV’s vision of an emerging research institution and a dedication to teaching at all levels, primarily on the Brownsville campus.
Minimum Qualifications
A Ph.D. in Philosophy, J.D. or S.J.D, or Ph.D. in a related field from an accredited university of higher education prior to start date of Fall 2022. ABDs will be considered, but a conferred doctorate by September 1, 2022 is required for appointment.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
