Assistant Professor in Landscape Architecture (Full-time, tenure track)

Temple University’s Tyler School of Art and Architecture invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor appointment in Landscape Architecture.

The successful candidate will join Tyler’s distinguished arts and design faculty in the Architecture and Environmental Design Department. Located primarily on a vibrant urban campus in Philadelphia, PA, Temple University is a public, research university with over 30,000 students in 17 schools and colleges. Temple is an R1 university and is ranked in the top 100 “Best Colleges” by U.S. News and World Report. Temple’s 187-acre Ambler Campus located in Ambler, PA, is home to the Ambler Arboretum, the Ambler Field Station, Greenhouse Education and Research Complex, and numerous historic gardens and natural spaces. Tyler’s Landscape Architecture and Horticulture Programs offer Associate and Bachelor of Science degrees in Horticulture, the Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture degree (BSLA), and the Master of Landscape Architecture (MLArch) degree that emphasizes ecological restoration. The first two years of the BSLA program occur primarily on the Main Campus in Philadelphia, while the Junior and Senior years are at the Ambler Campus. The BSLA program is ecologically and horticulturally focused and the Junior year of the BSLA program has a unique design-build studio that typically displays an exhibit at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s world-renowned Flower Show. The MLArch and Horticulture Programs are offered exclusively at the Ambler Campus. The BSLA and MLArch are both professional, LAAB-accredited programs. Other Tyler degree offerings include Architecture, Facilities Management, Historic Preservation, Community Development, and City and Regional Planning as well as numerous programs in the arts, art history, art education, and graphic design. 

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will teach design studios at the undergraduate and graduate level throughout the curricula, which may focus on design foundations, ecological design, urban design, community-based design, design/build, and other topics; required courses such as site engineering, computer technology, design research methods or planting design; and will support graduate level design research in areas of landscape architecture and ecological restoration. They will conduct and disseminate a body of scholarly research related to landscape architecture that demonstrates intellectual leadership in the field. Additionally, the candidate will serve on program, department, and school committees and participate in other activities such as curriculum development. 

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a professional landscape architecture degree. A terminal degree in landscape architecture (Master of Landscape Architecture or international equivalent) or a research-based Master of Science or PhD in Landscape Architecture is also a requirement. The candidate should demonstrate experience in landscape architectural research or landscape architectural professional practice that will enable the development of a successful and productive research program. Areas of expertise may include but are not limited to basic design, computer technology, ecological design, community design, or areas of sustainability, such as landscape performance, resilience, and climate change. Candidates should have a minimum of two years of teaching experience as well as experience in professional practice. Landscape architectural licensure is preferred.

Rank will be at an assistant professor level.
