The Operations and Management Department at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, Menomonie, Wisconsin, USA, seeks individuals with an expertise in Graphic Communications, a passion for teaching, an inquisitive disposition for applied research, and leadership skills to fill an opening for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor starting August 2024. UW-Stout currently offers courses within a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Communications, a minor in Graphic Media & Print Management, and service courses serving diverse student interests that prepare students for leadership careers in the today's dynamic graphic communications industry.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum/Required

  • Have one of the following by employment start date:
    ' Master's degree with 5 years of experience in relevant field
    ' Terminal degree (Ph.D., Ed.D., etc.) in relevant field or ABD with a firm completion date
  • Demonstrated work experience and/or certifications in at least one of the following:
    ' Pre media layout for print and/or digital
    ' Print production and/or processes
    ' Adobe Creative Cloud
    ' Graphic workflow technologies
    ' Color management
    ' Other related to publishing and printing experience
  • Evidence of potential for teaching excellence 
  • Demonstrated interest in advancing student learning in area of Graphic Communications

Highly Desired/Preferred

  • Terminal degree (Ph.D., Ed.D., etc.) in an area of expertise relevant to Graphic Communications or Print Technologies
  • Demonstrated success working in graphics print production related to graphics media; print packaging; publication/pre-media; information technologies with a print/digital media emphasis; graphic communications career & technical education emphasis; or related disciplines
  • Record of successful teaching and/or training at the post-secondary, college and/or professional level and across in-person and online modalities 
  • Demonstrated potential for applied scholarship 
  • Commitment to cultivating a work environment and student experience that embraces inclusion

The university emphasizes teaching excellence; candidates brought to campus will be required to teach a component of a class as part of the interview process and discuss how instruction partners/is supported by an online learning management system.

Note: A terminal degree (Ph.D. Ed,D, etc.) required for promotion to full professor, unless by special exception process.

RESPONSIBILITIES

' Teach face-to-face, hybrid, and online, undergraduate courses according to departmental instructional plans. The current primary instructional needs for the Operations and Management position call for teaching coursework in Graphic Communications related to content creation, print production and/or processes, Adobe creative cloud, graphic workflow technologies, color management, and other related to publishing, package print technologies, commercial print, and user experience.

' An important role of the Graphic Communications courses is to provide support for several other campus programs such as Graphic Design and Packaging so active interaction and collaboration with these programs is expected.

' In addition to teaching, all UW-Stout faculty are expected to provide student academic advisement and conduct assessment of student learning. This includes contributing to academic program assessment, accreditation, and continuous improvement processes, in collaboration with faculty and staff.

' Leadership of the academic program and with industry partnerships is a key part of this position.  

' Faculty are expected to participate in research and professional development including publishing, as well as participate in service at the Department and college/university levels. 

' Given the rapid pace of change within this technology-related discipline, UW-Stout encourages and supports active partnerships with industry employers, including summer work experiences and other professional development opportunities, for faculty to remain current in the discipline.

PROGRAM INFORMATION

The University of Wisconsin-Stout has prepared students for careers in the print industry since 1912. Today, UW-Stout offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Graphic Communications along with a minor in Graphic Media & Print Management that prepares students for leadership careers in the modern graphic communications industry. UW-Stout's GCOM students learn prepress workflows, imaging processes, traditional and digital reproduction technologies, post-press/finishing techniques, and business fundamentals in the classroom and in five hands-on production labs, a reflection of UW-Stout's ongoing polytechnic educational mission. A 15-member advisory committee comprised of industry professionals provides regular input that guides curriculum, ensuring that UW-Stout continues to prepare qualified, in-demand professionals for industry employment.

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

The Operations and Management (O&M) Department is housed in the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Management. O&M primarily serves undergraduate majors in Management, Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Technology, Construction, Graphic Communications, and Packaging, as well as graduate majors in Training and Human Resources Development, Engineering, Risk Control, and Operations and Supply Management. The department currently has 40 faculty/staff and offers in excess of 50 courses and 100 different sections each semester.
