Assistant Professor in Exercise Science (Appointment Stream) Position
The Department of Health and Human Development in the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh seeks an 8-month appointment stream assistant professor in Exercise Science. The work of the department is focused on rigorous training around the application of exercise for the prevention and management of chronic diseases and conditions, human performance, and improving health and well-being across the lifespan. Recently accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), the Exercise Science program is held to the standards and guidelines set forth and will facilitate the preparation of students seeking employment in health, fitness, and exercise-related fields. The study of exercise science also provides an educational foundation for graduate training in additional allied health-related areas (e.g., physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant, or other health sciences). Expertise and coursework in the department include a focus on exercise physiology, applied human anatomy, functional movement, healthy lifestyle behaviors, fitness assessment and exercise prescription, nutrition, and strength and conditioning. We are searching for a scholar-practitioner who has expertise in one or more of these areas, and who can contribute to our commitment of work examining social determinants of health and health disparities. For this position, the faculty member will have an 18 credit-hour load and includes teaching courses in applied human anatomy and physiology and related laboratories, advising, and mentoring undergraduate students, and enhancing practicum opportunities that would align with community-facing initiatives in the department. Additionally, there may be opportunities for teaching graduate-level courses housed in the Department of Health and Human Development.
We are interested in candidates who will contribute to the School of Education’s mission-vision and strategic goals and priorities, which lay out our “commitment to equity, justice, and innovation.” The school’s cultural drivers include high-quality research; advocation and agitation; a commitment to student, family, and community success; and the cultivation of relationships and engaged partnerships. We approach learning as intertwined with health, wellness, and human development. The unifying feature of our department is a focus on the activities of daily living and the integral role of relationships in human growth and adaptation.
We welcome applications from recent doctoral graduates and faculty at the rank of assistant professor. The position will begin September 1, 2024.
Required:
· Earned doctorate with training and research experience in exercise physiology, kinesiology, or related field.
· Experience teaching relevant curricula (i.e., applied human anatomy, exercise physiology)
· Experience designing and delivering in-person and online coursework
· Experience working with students (teaching, mentoring, advising)
Preferred: Exercise Science related national certifications (e.g., ACSM-EP, NSCA CSCS)
Interested applicants should submit:
· Current CV
· Names and contact information for three references (finalists will need written references)
· Letter of interest
· Teaching philosophy statement
Review of application materials will begin immediately and continue until December 31, 2023, or when the position is filled.
For questions about the submission process, email [email protected] and for questions about the position or the School of Education, email the Search Committee Chair, Dr. Benjamin Gordon ([email protected] ).
ADDITIONAL REQUIRED ITEMS: Names and contact information for three references (finalists will need written references)
