Assistant Professor in Composition/Theory

The Department of Music of the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a full-time faculty position in Composition/Theory to begin on September 1, 2024, pending budgetary approval. 

Title: Assistant Professor in Composition/Theory; full-time; tenure stream

Qualifications: Ph.D. or D.M.A. in Composition or Composition/Theory received by June 1, 2024. High level of compositional activity in the field as demonstrated by performances, commissions, residencies, and recordings. Creative work should include acoustic and electronic media. Record of teaching composition and related subjects at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Expertise in any of the following additional areas: orchestration, contemporary music studies, music theory, or other related research/teaching interests. 

Duties: Teach courses in composition and music theory; assist faculty in organizing concerts and guest artist visits; advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate composers; serve on graduate dissertations and comprehensive exam committees. Teaching load: 2:2.

The successful candidate will work closely with the composition/theory faculty. We are seeking candidates whose interests complement those of current faculty, and who can work across sub-disciplines within the department and with colleagues elsewhere in the University. 

The Department of Music offers a B.A. degree in a liberal arts curriculum and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees with concentrations in Composition/Theory, Ethnomusicology, Jazz Studies, and Musicology. The undergraduate program provides students with instruction in music history, world perspectives, theoretical frameworks, performance, and composition.
