The Department of Electrical and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Vermont (UVM) invites applications for two tenure-track hires in Biomedical Engineering. Applicants will be considered at both the Assistant and Associate Professor rank. Qualified Associate Professors may be considered for the Karl and Mary Fessenden Professorship in Biomedical Engineering.
Candidates are expected to hold baccalaureate and doctorate degrees in Biomedical Engineering or a related field. Qualified candidates in all areas are encouraged to apply. The department seeks to grow in multiple research areas including human motion capture, wearable biosensing, biotransport, biomaterials, tissue engineering, bioimaging, and/or digital health.
These hires will support bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD programs in Biomedical Engineering. The anticipated start date is Fall 2024. Successful candidates will be joining UVM following a period of unprecedented growth that has led to the successful completion of world-class STEM facilities, the development of an ABET accredited BS degree, the expansion of MS and PhD degrees in BME, and the creation of the entrepreneurship-focused Center for Biomedical Innovation. Biomedical Engineering is among the fastest growing and largest undergraduate majors at UVM. The Biomedical Engineering Program at UVM leverages strong curricular and research ties with the University’s Larner College of Medicine and the University of Vermont Medical Center (a regional referral center providing advanced care for more than 1 million patients), which are all located in very close proximity on the same campus. The BME Program values interdisciplinary research and
innovative approaches to engineering education, as illustrated by a new undergraduate curriculum focused on design thinking and active learning. The BME major enjoys high student enrollment and a strong culture of undergraduate research. External research funding has expanded rapidly in recent years, fueled by shared resources like the Vermont Advanced Computing Core and strong connections with the Larner College of Medicine.
Successful candidates will be expected to develop a thriving and externally funded research program, teach undergraduate and graduate courses in BME, and advise and mentor students at all levels. All qualified applicants will be considered, but we are particularly interested in those who work in areas that complement existing research strengths of the BME Program and the Larner College of Medicine. The scientific and academic environments in the Department of Electrical and Biomedical Engineering, the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, and throughout the UVM community are dynamic, highly collaborative, and multi-disciplinary.
