POSITION DESCRIPTION The Division of Earth and Climate Sciences in the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in area of Geochemistry of Earth-Water-Air Systems. We seek applicants with a strong background in earth sciences and expertise in chemical reactions among rocks, water, the atmosphere, soils, and/or biota. We are particularly interested in scientists whose research pertains to fundamental questions related to climate change, mitigation of climate change, and energy transformation.

We are strongly committed to diversification of our faculty, and to becoming an inclusive, antiracist community. Examples of ongoing programming to promote these values may be found at DEI Nicholas School and the DEI Marine Lab. Candidates should be able to establish research programs that integrate field, laboratory, and modeling studies. The successful applicant is expected to develop an externally funded research program, teach and advise undergraduate and graduate students, and contribute to appropriate service activities within the University and the applicant’s professional field. This position is part of a cluster hiring initiative in the Nicholas School focused on climate and contribute to Duke University’s institution-wide commitment to addressing climate change.

We recognize that cluster hires can provide additional support for new faculty from a diversity of backgrounds and promote intellectual synergy. Joint appointments with other Duke University departments and schools will also be considered. Appointment at a level higher than Assistant Professor will be considered in extraordinary cases.

The Division of Earth and Climate Sciences is committed to supporting the ‘whole person’, whether faculty, students, or staff. This includes addressing the broader needs of faculty, including dual career couples and primary care givers. Financial and in-kind resources are available from the University, the Nicholas School, and the Division to pursue activities that help accelerate our efforts to achieve our equity and inclusion goals.

QUALIFICATIONS Basic qualifications Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) received no later than May, 2023. Preferred qualifications Candidates should demonstrate an exceptional research trajectory with the promise of developing innovative externally-funded research programs that will advance knowledge of, or solutions to, important problems in earth and climate sciences. Candidates should show potential to be effective teachers and advisors of undergraduate and graduate students, and enthusiasm to integrate elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into their teaching and research activities.
