Description of Work Unit
The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition has 32 faculty and adjunct members and 23 research associates and administrative staff, ~600 undergraduate students and offers undergraduate degrees in Nutrition and Food Science, Hospitality Management and Fermentation Science and Technology. The department also offers MS and PhD degrees in Nutrition Science, Community Nutrition and Food Science and Safety and currently has ~75 graduate students. Department research is supported by federal grants from NIH, USDA, foundations, industry and two endowments that support a faculty chair and the Lillian Fountain-Smith Nutrition Conference hosted by the department. Research has focused on childhood obesity, community nutrition among limited resource audiences, molecular and metabolic nutrition targeted at chronic disease prevention, bioactive food components, and food safety. The department’s Extension faculty is responsible for numerous creative, high impact educational and engagement programs throughout the state, including EFNEP. A MPH program focus area in Public Health Nutrition within the School of Public Health provides new collaborative opportunities. The department offers an accredited B.S. dietetics program and an M.S. coordinated dietetic internship program. With the overall growth in the department, faculty and student diversity has increased. Position Summary
The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at CSU invites applications for a 12-month non-tenure track Assistant Professor Position in Fermentation Science and Technology. We seek applications from experts in the food & beverage fermentation industries who have industry experience and have earned a PhD. Preference will be given to candidates who have extensive experience in student mentoring, course development, teaching fermentation related courses at the undergraduate level, overseeing quality lab operations, industry-driven research, and demonstrable brewing operations knowledge. Responsibilities will include lab management, course instruction, student supervision, and brewing operations support. The successful candidate will have the ability to work independently, self-motivate, think critically, troubleshoot, and communicate effectively, and will also be expected to contribute to the increased emphasis on industry-driven research. The position is targeted to start October 1, 2022.

Required Job Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in fermentation science, brewing, or related field (microbiology, chemistry, etc.)
  • 5+ years brewing and/or fermentation laboratory experience
  • Recent teaching experience at the undergraduate level; prior experience teaching courses related to fermentation science
  • Experience working in a scientific laboratory setting and proficiency using laboratory equipment and instrumentation
  • Experience with grant writing and related industry and academic funding resources
  • Record of scientific, technical, and/or academic publications, presentations, or conference proceedings
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and teamwork skills and communication abilities, both written and verbal
  • Experience reading, analyzing, interpreting, and writing technical standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate and graduate students
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Experience with automated brewing interfaces and equipment that includes multiple logic functions and capabilities requiring specialized training
  • Experience serving on honors and/or graduate student research committees
  • Membership in relevant industry organization(s)
  • Experience with website and social media management

The successful candidate will be expected to manage day-to-day operations of the various Fermentation Science and Technology (FST) quality control and testing laboratories in support of research, student projects, and revenue generation. In addition, the successful applicant will be expected to attend meetings and coordinate with various brewing operations in the Gifford and Ramskeller breweries related to FST classes, research, and revenue generation. This position will also be responsible for managing and maintaining adherence to OSHA, CDPHE, and CSU safety regulations; as well as managing hazardous waste generation.
