Job Overview

The Department of Psychology at the University of Cincinnati (UC) seeks to hire an Assistant Professor-Educator who will contribute to our doctoral program in experimental psychology, as well as our department’s graduate and undergraduate teaching missions. The experimental program is a founding member of UC’s Center for Cognition, Action, and Perception (CAP), a multidisciplinary research center bringing together researchers in biology, engineering, philosophy, physics, and psychology.

 

This position is a non-tenure eligible Assistant Professor - Educator position with a start date of August 15, 2023. The initial term is 3 years and is renewable upon satisfactory performance. The expected teaching load is seven units per academic year. Instructional duties will be met through a) undergraduate and graduate classroom teaching, and b) by providing hands-on technical training in research practicum courses. The Educator retention and promotion criteria emphasize teaching excellence, leadership in instructional innovation, and service. Research productivity is not expected or evaluated but is permitted.

Essential Functions

The successful candidate will:

  • Teach traditional psychology courses at the undergraduate level, such as statistics and research methods.
  • Teach at least some of our specialty topics including: human factors and human-machine interaction, complexity science, embodiment, perception-action, skills in systems technology, and related topics in experimental psychology.
  • Be expected to train CAP doctoral students in systems technologies and in advanced data analysis methods used in behavioral science research.

 

Duties will include:

  • Teaching formal courses at both graduate and undergraduate level.
  • Providing technical support for student research projects through research practica.
  • Engaging in regular departmental service activities, such as but not limited to curriculum committee service and service supporting the doctoral program, such as coordination of activities in the different research labs and coordination of onboarding activities of new student researchers.

Minimum Requirements

Prior to effective date of appointment, candidates must have:

  • PhD in Psychology, Engineering Psychology or related field.
  • Demonstrable experience in a domain at the intersection of humans and technology, with the required experience, competencies and expertise described below.
  • One (1) academic term of experience teaching technical content at the college level.
  • Advanced competency in at least one common programming language (e.g., open source languages such as R and Python).
  • Expertise with Virtual Reality and one additional systems technology platform (e.g., motion capture, robotic systems, eye tracking).
  • Expertise with complex dynamical systems modeling and one additional type of linear and non-linear statistical method (e.g., artificial intelligence & machine learning, bootstrapping, distribution modeling, fractal data analysis & sample entropy, neural networks, recurrence analysis, or regression & principal component analysis).
  • Advanced competencies in programming and expertise in systems technology and statistical data analysis methods can be demonstrated through teaching experience (a formal course or workshop is acceptable) or professional or academic reference letters from collaborators describing how your expertise with a given language, system or data analysis method supported their research work.
