Organizational Unit Overview
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is housed in the Brody School of Medicine (BSOM) on the Health Sciences Campus at ECU. BSOM embraces the role cutting-edge research and technology in improving the health status of people living in eastern North Carolina. BSOM grants M.D. and Ph.D./M.S. degrees in Biomedical Sciences. The school has state-of-the-art core facilities for mass spectrometry (MS), high resolution microscopy, flow cytometry, genomics, and animal care. These include high-resolution MS services for proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics and structural proteomics and multiple confocal facilities for a variety of applications. ECU continues to make significant investments in research infrastructure and in the recruitment of highly motivated, talented faculty.
ECU is located in Greenville, a city of 90,000 residents in the coastal region of North Carolina. Job Duties
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) at East Carolina University (ECU) is seeking a talented and motivated Assistant Professor (tenure track). The department currently has 12 full-time faculty , plus graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral trainees and technical staff. BMB faculty are actively engaged in basic science and translational research. Areas of interest include gene expression and epigenetics, stem cell and germline biology, cancer and tumorigenesis, metabolic dysfunction, neurodegeneration, post-translational regulation, and protein structure function relationships. Current faculty maintain research funding from NIH, NSF, ACS, and private foundations. BMB faculty also play a vital role in medical, dental and graduate student education. The ideal candidate will have potential to contribute to each of these efforts.
The successful candidate will have an independent research program that shows promise for extramural funding. In addition to research, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the Department’s teaching mission in the graduate, medical and dental schools. The candidate will also serve as a mentor for undergraduate and graduate students. The ideal candidate will provide effective mentoring to students through active contributions to the education, research, and service missions of the department.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Pursue novel and significant research directions through experimental efforts that engage students and secures extramural funding.
  • Contribute to the didactic teaching responsibilities in the MD, DMD, and graduate programs. It is expected that the candidate will build effective teaching methods that contribute to supportive and challenging education.
  • Work collegially with faculty colleagues, course directors and administrators to facilitate the teaching, service, and research missions of the department.
  • Adhere to University policies and the provisions of the Faculty Manual and the Brody School of Medicine Unit (Governance) Code.

Minimum Education/Experience
The candidate must have a doctorate degree (PhD, MD or DVM) in a relevant basic science field with some documented research experience.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Preferred experience will include an established history of publishing novel research and writing grant proposals, as well as demonstrated teaching and service experience.
