Organizational Unit Overview
The Department of Geography, Planning and Environment (DGPE) (https://geography.ecu.edu/), one of 16 departments in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences (THCAS) at East Carolina University (ECU), is a diverse, research-active, and collegial unit committed to cultivating a culture of belonging and opportunity for all students. DGPE offers four undergraduate B.S. degrees (Geography, Applied Atmospheric Science, Geographic Information Science and Technology, and Community and Regional Planning) and two M.S. degrees (Geography, and Planning and Development), as well as undergraduate and graduate certificates in GIS.
The department also contributes curriculum and faculty leadership to the Environmental Studies concentration in the Multidisciplinary Studies degree program in THCAS. DGPE faculty also have a strong track record of regionally relevant research and community engagement and outreach activities. The department is home to the ECU Center for Geographic Information Science, which promotes the development and application of geospatial data and technology in support of the University’s teaching, research, and outreach missions. The department values interdisciplinary research, and maintains active collaborations with units across ECU’s campus, including the Departments of Biology, Coastal Studies, Economics, Engineering, Public Health, and Recreational Sciences, as well as ECU’s Water Resources Center (WRC).
The WRC (water.ecu.edu) is housed within THCAS with a mission to enable ECU faculty and students to perform world-class water-related research, education, and outreach across Eastern North Carolina. The Center and its collaborative office, laboratory, and field facilities support the work of over 30 affiliated faculty from natural science, social science, and engineering across the institution with an emphasis on developing programs and infrastructure that support strategic initiatives at ECU.

Job Duties
The Department of Geography, Planning and Environment invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor with expertise in the application of Geographic Information Science (GIS) to an applied research area related to water resources. The position is set to begin August 2024.
The well-qualified candidate will apply geospatial analysis and modeling using innovative methods to advance a vibrant, externally funded research program in an area at the intersection of water and society. Topical specialties might include, but are not limited to, intersections between water policy, management and/or governance and such thematic issues as food security, environmental inequalities, energy transitions, climate change adaptation, and human health. A successful candidate will be expected to help strengthen and grow the Department’s BS degree in Geographic Information Science and Technology and enhance the profile of GIS across the ECU campus and the region. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, specifically in GIS and in their area of research, and to contribute to the activities of ECU’s Water Resources Center and Center for Geographic Information Science. Appropriate service to the department, university and profession is also an expectation.
Minimum Education/Experience
PhD in Geography or a closely related discipline is required. However, ABD candidates may be considered. Initial appointment will be at the probationary-term rank of Assistant Professor. ABD candidates must have the terminal degree conferred prior to first reappointment. Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

We have a preference for candidates who embrace interdisciplinary research and can demonstrate potential for collaboration with other academic units at ECU’s main campus, Health Science campus (which includes Brody School of Medicine) and Outer Banks campus. We are open to a range of methodological approaches, including candidates who employ participatory or community-engaged methods. We seek a scholar-teacher who demonstrates excellence in the classroom and maintains an active and impactful research agenda.
