The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures (https://foreign.ecu.edu/ ) is a diverse, research-active, and collegial unit that offers a Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages and Literatures with eight concentration areas: French, French Education, German, German Education, Hispanic Studies, Hispanic Studies Education, Global Studies and Classical Studies; minors in French, German, and Hispanic Studies; as well as a Master of Arts in Hispanic Studies. The department embraces the literatures, linguistics, and cultures associated with the languages in our unit. Faculty routinely collaborate with colleagues throughout the university on discipline-based research, community-engaged research, creative activity, academic programming, and co- and extra-curricular activities. Frequent partners include Public Health, History, Marriage and Family Therapy, and multiple areas in the College of Education, as well as the Honors College, the Office of Global Affairs, and local nonprofits addressing needs in the community. Faculty leaders from the department direct the University’s Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), which aims to develop students’ intercultural competence. Featuring a variety of faculty-led study abroad programs in Latin America and Europe, the Department is interested in pursuing other such opportunities in Africa or the Caribbean. Job Duties
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin August 2024. We seek candidates in French and Francophone Studies with an active scholarly agenda in the literatures and cultures of the French-speaking African diaspora in one or more of the following areas: Caribbean, Mediterranean, or Indian Ocean, including the diaspora in France and Europe or in transnational and transcultural studies. Candidates will conduct research rooted in the 20th and/or 21st centuries and in one or more transdisciplinary field(s), including, but not limited to, visual studies, environmental studies, ethnic studies, gender and sexuality studies, or performance studies. The successful candidate will be expected to generate high quality (in content and style) publications which reveal consistent research efforts.
We also seek candidates with potential for or demonstrated excellence in teaching. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate language, literature, and culture courses in the French program, general-education courses in English in the Global Studies program, and core and concentration courses for the African and African American Studies program. New courses may be developed and all courses may be taught in face-to-face, hybrid, and/or online formats.
The successful candidate also will play an active role in student recruitment to programs of study within the department and to the African and African American Studies program. Further service to the university, community, and profession is expected
Minimum Education/Experience
Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in French Language and Literature or a closely related field is required. However, ABD candidates may be considered. For ABD candidates, initial appointment will be at the probationary-term rank of Assistant Professor. ABD candidates must have the terminal degree conferred prior to first reappointment.
Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Native or near-native fluency in French and English is required.
