Do you have a passion for dairy production and a drive to shape the future of this vital industry? South Dakota State University is currently seeking an Assistant Professor in Dairy Production. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual dedicated to advancing both the academic field and practical aspects of dairy production with emphasis on dairy cattle. As an Assistant Professor, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to academic excellence while fostering the next generation of dairy production experts. This role offers a stimulating environment that encourages innovative research, dynamic teaching, and active engagement with industry partners. This position is located in Brookings, South Dakota. This position is a 9 month, full-time, tenure-track, benefits-eligible position.  
 
The Dairy Food and Science department has 9 faculty members, approximately 10 staff members, and 30 graduate research assistants. The faculty and staff within the department bring a wealth of experience, recognized expertise, and a strong dedication to teaching, research, and service. Their commitment empowers undergraduate and graduate students to carve out paths for lifelong and rewarding careers in their chosen fields.
 
Pivotal resources like the Alfred Dairy Science Hall, the cutting-edge Davis Dairy Plant, local Commercial Dairy Farms, and the Department of Animal Science Facilities are the important support system. These facilities play a central role in facilitating productive interactions between students and faculty. Here, students engage in hands-on experiential learning, and their practical applications in dairy cattle-related industries.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Scholarly/Research: 60% Research in the area of dairy production with emphasis on application on dairy cattle farm operations (genetics and reproduction) and/or dairy cattle nutrition. The incumbent is expected to develop an independent, extra-murally funded research program that is nationally and internationally recognized through peer-reviewed publications.
  • Service expectations include participation in appropriate professional organizations, departmental/college/University committees and outreach activities.
  • Teaching/Advising: 40% Teaching undergraduate and graduate levels Dairy Production Courses such as Dairy Breeding and Genetics, Farm Operations, Dairy Farm Evaluation, Thesis and Dissertation
  • Courses are to be determined and position will include advising and teaching related to dairy production.

  
SALARY RANGE:
Salary is commensurate with qualifications. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and eleven paid holidays.  Relocation benefits are available per university’s guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Applicant must have an earned Ph.D. degree in Dairy Science (Production), or a closely related field by date of appointment. 
  • Relevant knowledge and experience of dairy farm operations (management, genetics, and reproduction) and/or dairy nutrition is required. 
  • Experience in writing grants. 
  • Ability to teach Dairy production at the undergraduate and graduate levels is essential. 
  • Ability to publish the results of original research in peer-reviewed journals and develop an independent, externally-funded research program.
  • Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Post-doctoral experience or international equivalent in related discipline.
  • Experience in Precision Technology as applied to dairy farm operations.
