Description of Work Unit
The Department consists of sixteen tenured and tenure-track faculty and offers B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in Sociology. At the undergraduate level, the Department offers concentrations in General Sociology, Criminology and Criminal Justice, and Environmental Sociology. At the graduate level, which includes a focus on Social Change, departmental areas of strength include Environment and Natural Resources; Food, Agriculture, and Development; Crime, Law, and Deviance; and Social Inequality, Social Justice, and Governance. The Department supports three research centers: the Center for the Study of Crime and Justice, the Center for Energy and Behavior, and the Center for Fair and Alternative Trade. There are more than 570 undergraduate majors (75% of which concentrate in Criminology/Criminal Justice) and about 40 active graduate students in the program. Position Summary
This posting is for two Assistant Professors, tenure track, nine-month positions. One with a focus on Criminology and Criminal Justice and one with a focus on Sociology of Race. Both beginning August 16, 2023. Competitive salary for entry-level position. The Department offers undergraduate, M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in Sociology. The successful candidate must be able to contribute across these program levels. Please indicate in your cover letter which position(s) in which you are interested. Assistant Professor of Criminology/Criminal Justice:
  • Ph.D. in Sociology, Criminology, or related social science discipline by August 16, 2023,

Assistant Professor of Sociology of Race:
  • Ph.D. in Sociology or related discipline by August 16, 2023,

Preferred Job Qualifications
Assistant Professor of Criminology/Criminal Justice:
  • The Department seeks an individual who will teach a combination of courses associated with criminology and criminal justice, and especially someone with expertise in an area of critical criminology.
  • The candidate should demonstrate an ability and willingness to teach a large section of a lower division Introduction to Criminology and Criminal Justice as well as courses across the criminology curriculum with a focus on criminal justice systems and critical criminology.
  • All faculty members are expected to teach two courses a semester, to develop a program of research and publication, to be engaged in the graduate program, and to be active in service.

Assistant Professor of Sociology of Race:
  • The Department also seeks an individual who specializes in the sociology of race.
  • The candidate should demonstrate an ability and willingness to teach a large section of a lower division undergraduate course on the sociology of race in the All-University Core Curriculum as well as courses in research methods, with a preference for those who can teach quantitative and/or mixed-method approaches.

All faculty members are expected to teach two courses a semester, to develop a program of research and publication, to be engaged in the graduate program and to be active in service.
Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate an ability to contribute to research, teaching and advising in department areas of strength which include: (1) Environment and Natural Resources, (2) Food, Agriculture, and Development, (3) Crime, Law, and Deviance; and (4) Social Inequality, Social Justice, and Governance.
Candidates are sought who can work effectively and collegially with a professionally diverse faculty and in an interdisciplinary university setting. The successful candidate for the Assistant Professor of Criminology will have a strong research record related to Criminology and Criminal Justice with preference given to candidates with research related to critical criminology. The successful candidate for the Assistant Professor of Sociology of Race will have a strong research record related to sociology of race. Preference will be given to candidates who can also contribute to department strengths in one or more of other department research foci: (1) Environment and Natural Resources; (2) Food, Agriculture and Development; and (3) Social Inequality, Social Justice, and Governance.
