Job Description Summary
The Department of Physics in the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) at Auburn University (AU) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor, with research focus in theoretical/computational condensed matter physics (CMP). We welcome applications in research areas across the spectrum of CMP, especially (but not limited to) quantum materials by design, dynamics of quantum correlated materials, and data-driven and machine learning computational approaches to materials physics. Currently, the CMP program at AU spans experimental and theoretical areas of quantum materials, materials for energy conversion and storage, thin films, semiconductor devices, materials characterization, and first principles descriptions. Other active areas of research within the Department include atomic molecular and optical physics, biophysics, plasma physics, space physics, and physics education.  The Department currently has 25 tenure/tenure-track faculty and an enrollment of approximately 120 undergraduate and graduate students.
The successful candidate is expected to (1) establish an extramurally funded research program while building collaborative relationships with faculty in physics and across the university, (2) demonstrate strong leadership potential in the field of CMP and play an active role in expanding and growing the CMP program at AU, (3) supervise undergraduate, graduate students, and post-doctoral researchers, and (4) provide excellent instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the physics curriculum.
We welcome applications from individuals belonging to historically underrepresented groups in the field of physics.
Please submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statements of research plans (3-5 pages) and teaching philosophy (1-3 pages), as well as information for three professional references. The addition of an inclusion statement describing how past and/or planned contributions to teaching, research, and/or service will serve to advance the mission of the College of Sciences and Mathematics in creating an inclusive environment would be highly desirable.
The desired starting date is August 16, 2024. The Department of Physics at AU offers a collegial and collaborative professional environment, and is committed to fostering inclusivity by enhancing diversity within our faculty, staff, and student body.
