Department Information

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a dynamic and rapidly growing department. Our department currently has 1,100 students including 70 PhD and 100 MS students, including 30 students in our online cybersecurity MS. We currently have 24 CSE faculty and are expecting to hire several more faculty over the next few years. UNR Cybersecurity Center is considered one of the strongest interdisciplinary centers in the country with about 30 faculty from over nine different disciplines affiliated with the cybersecurity center and engaging in research, education, and outreach. The department also has strong expertise in AI/ML and closely related fields like robotics/computer vision. The data science cluster has also been growing rapidly with many opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration across campus.

In August of 2020, the CSE department moved into the top two floors of the new engineering building where it occupies 23,000 square feet of the state-of-the-art research space, including 30 faculty offices and nine shared research labs, each more than 1,000 square feet with every office and lab offering sweeping views over the snow-capped Sierra mountains.

The CSE Department has multiple NSF CAREER awardees. Apart from NSF, research in the department is also supported by DoD, DoE, DHS, NIH, DARPA, and NASA, as well as by companies such as Tesla, Google, Microsoft, etc. With Nevada being an EPSCoR state, faculty are considered highly competitive for federal funds due to co-funding opportunities.

With strong research and education programs in (1) Cybersecurity and Network Systems, (2) Intelligent and Autonomous Systems & (3) Data and Software Systems, the department’s average annual research expenditure has been over $5M for the past 3 years. The department currently offers B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science and engineering; two Minors and one Graduate certificate in cybersecurity; a minor in digital interactive games; and a minor in big data. We currently offer an online MS in Cybersecurity, and a robotics MS will be launched in the fall of 2024. There are preliminary discussions with other departments to start a computational data science MS program. We expect strong growth in research funding and student enrollments over the next several years. For more details, please visit: https://www.cse.unr.edu.
