Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Animal Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor position with responsibilities in animal nutrition or metabolism. This is a 9-month, tenure-track position with 70% teaching and 25% research and 5% service responsibilities. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching undergraduate courses related to comparative animal nutrition and companion animal science. They will also be expected to develop a collaborative, externally-funded research program from a comparative approach. Areas of potential research include, but are not limited to, petfood production and evaluation, nutrient utilization, nutritional physiology and nutritional biochemistry to enhance the nutrition and the well-being of animals across various taxa.

The successful applicant will demonstrate the ability to address emerging and traditional issues in comparative animal nutrition and management and demonstrate the ability to relate those issues to students and to other stakeholders. They will have demonstrable expertise in one or more of the following: diet formulation, nutrient utilization, clinical nutrition, nutrient metabolism, intestinal health, immune system nutrient requirements, or developmental regulation. The successful candidate will have ample opportunity to work in cross-disciplinary teams for both teaching and research with faculty in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Evidence of effective written and oral communication skills is required.  Additionally, the successful candidate must have demonstrated the ability to work in a team-based, collaborative environment to solve problems, develop programs, and teach effectively.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

PhD, by start date, in Animal Science or related discipline with experience in companion animal or comparative animal disciplines.


Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in teaching, or scholarship of teaching and learning related to companion animal disciplines.

Experience in research in one or more of the following nutrition disciplines: diet formulation, nutrient utilization, clinical nutrition, nutrient metabolism, intestinal health, immune system nutrient requirements, or developmental regulation.
