Description of Work Unit
The Department of Health and Exercise Science (HES) is one of eight academic programs in the College of Health and Human Sciences. Colorado State University is Colorado’s land grant institution and holds the Doctoral/Research University – Extensive classification from the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education. Health and Exercise Science is focused on a three-part mission of undergraduate and graduate teaching, research and scholarly work and outreach/engagement/service. We are committed to our goal of producing nationally and internationally recognized research programs and graduates that are focused on helping people protect and improve their health and quality of life throughout the lifespan.
The Department has ~1050 undergraduate majors, 30-35 M.S. and Ph.D. students, 18-20 academic and research staff and 27 faculty members. Faculty in the Department of Health and Exercise Science have a strong commitment to high-quality teaching and advising and conduct innovative research with an emphasis on basic, translational, and clinical work to prevent aging-related disease and disability and maximize human functional performance.
The Human Performance Clinical Research Laboratory, the research hub for HES, is a CSU Program of Research and Scholarly Excellence and a center for interdisciplinary research, training, and outreach. HES also has a strong focus on community engagement, including a First Responder Heart Disease Prevention Program, Adult Fitness Program, Noon Hour Fitness Program, Youth Sports Camps and an After-School program.

Position Summary
This 9-month tenure/tenure track appointment will begin August 16th, 2023 in the Department of Health and Exercise Science in the College of Health and Human Sciences. It is part of an interdisciplinary mental and behavioral health initiative by the College of Health and Human Sciences in which we will build on existing strengths across multiple programs to develop new degree programs and training options, build interdisciplinary research programs that involve new and innovative approaches to mental and behavioral health, and engage with communities to co-create solutions to mental and behavioral health challenges. To jumpstart this initiative, we are launching a multi-college cluster hire of 10-12 positions over the next two years to address core issues of mental and behavioral health, with special emphasis on the treatment and prevention of depression, suicide, addictions, and trauma, toward the broad goal of fostering resilience and promoting wellness.
Applicants are sought who have expertise in behavioral health and/or physical activity/exercise and mental health that complement our existing research strengths in Neuromechanics/Human Movement Disorders, Translational Biology of Aging, Molecular/Cellular Mechanisms of Exercise and Chronic Disease, and Physical Activity Promotion. Examples of potential research areas could include, but are not limited to: the role of physical activity/exercise in preventing and treating mental health disorders (e.g., anxiety, depression, etc.); the role of physical activity/exercise in elevating mood or as a countermeasure to addiction or other harmful behaviors; the underlying mechanism(s) by which physical activity/exercise impacts neurophysiological health or related mental health outcomes (using pre-clinical or clinical models); resilience and holistic health in military operators, veterans or first responders. The successful candidate is expected to establish a nationally recognized, externally funded research program, to integrate their research into existing department, college and university priority areas, and to teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students. The position will have outstanding department support, strong research infrastructure, and access to collaborative opportunities both within CSU and with industry partners.

Required Job Qualifications
  • Earned Ph.D. in Behavioral Health Sciences, Health Psychology, Kinesiology, Public Health, Health Promotion/Community Health, Health and Exercise Science or other related field
  • Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed research publications
  • Demonstrated promise to attract external funding related to behavioral health and/or physical activity/exercise and mental health that strengthens/broadens our current research areas
  • Evidence of a commitment to teaching and/or mentoring of undergraduate and graduate-level students
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Postdoctoral experience, previous academic appointment, or equivalent professional experience
  • Current extramural research funding
  • University-level teaching experience
  • Evidence of interdisciplinary research and capacity for successful collaboration
  • Commitment to advance the department’s commitment to diversity and inclusion through research, teaching and outreach with relevant programs, goals, and activities

The successful candidate will teach existing undergraduate and graduate courses as well as new graduate courses developed around their research agenda as per the effort distribution above (unless there is reduced teaching effort to accommodate external grant funded research; a likely scenario given the research strength sought). The expectation is that the teaching will align with this candidate’s expertise in exercise/physical activity and behavioral health. This person will be expected to play a key academic role in the Human Bioenergetics Ph.D., the M.S. in Exercise Science programs.
