The Division of Anatomy at The Ohio State University College of Medicine (OSUMC) in Columbus, OH invites applications for Assistant Rank Professor full-time faculty position with a specific focus in Pre-Doctorate Dental Anatomy Education. The Division of Anatomy currently serves approximately 125+ pre-doctorate and approximately 20 post-doctorate dental learners per year in an integrated program focused on Gross Anatomy, Head and Neck Anatomy, Neuroanatomy, Histology, and Embryology across two semesters of study. Other major functions for this position will be contribution to the Division’s mission of multi-cultural outreach education. Additional opportunities could include delivery of anatomy content to graduate and/or undergraduate learners based on the candidate’s background. Candidates should have a strong background in the use of information technology in the teaching of anatomy. Candidates are expected to have earned a doctorate in Anatomy or a related field and possess a record of excellence in teaching. Experience in teaching anatomy related disciplines (e.g., embryology, histology) is desirable, but not required. Candidates will support the teaching mission of the Division of Anatomy in gross anatomy focusing on predoctoral education. Successful candidates are also expected to engage in collaborative research commensurate with their level of development. Academic appointment at the level of Clinical Assistant Professor will be commensurate with the candidate’s background and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Full-time teaching load in predoctoral and postdoctoral anatomy for dental students lecture and laboratory courses with a specific focus in human gross anatomy. Responsibilities will include collaborating with other faculty on curriculum development within anatomy courses in a team-based environment.
  • Mentor undergraduate, graduate, and/or professional students in research projects in the applicant’s area of expertise.
  • No clinical responsibilities or efforts are afforded for this position.

Qualifications

  • Doctorate in the anatomical sciences or equivalent.
  • Preference will be given to those applicants with laboratory instructional experience.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with a strong background in the development of anatomy outreach education and outreach programming.
  • Preference will be given to those candidates who have evidence of strong collaboration in education with other applied academic health sciences departments.
  • Evidence of familiarity with dissection based teaching, particularly in the head and neck region.
  • Evidence of potential for successful teaching at the college/university level.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interprofessional skills.
  • An eagerness to engage with colleagues, staff, and administrators to develop improvement of educational experiences for our students.

About Anatomy at The Ohio State University

Construction of a new Anatomy Institute at The OSUMC was completed in January of 2022. This highly innovative and IT- enhanced space includes a new 3,750 square-foot morgue with seven independent laboratory spaces for undergraduate, graduate, medical and dental anatomy as well as specialized laboratories for undergraduate, outreach and medical and dental continuing education programming. The Anatomy Institute represents the first component of a new Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Center that will be completed in 2024 as part of an innovative model for health sciences education, which will create an environment that fosters the experiences and opportunities necessary for individuals to grow and become tomorrow’s health care leaders.

The new Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Center will include the construction of a new 59,400 square-foot Classroom Wing and back renovation of historic Hamilton Hall providing a 225,000 square-foot inter-professional learning facility composed of 33 interdisciplinary, state-of-the-art technology enhanced classrooms, 6,000 square foot student forum, 125-seat Grand Reading Room, 75-person computer center for interdisciplinary student-faculty use and numerous private study rooms and small collaboration spaces. This space will also include new office space designed to house the OSUMC Biomedical Education and Anatomy leadership, faculty and staff including specifically designed office space for Anatomy Undergraduate and Graduate Teaching Assistants. The four-story glass atrium health sciences forum will overlook a newly designed Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Quadrangle that will provide an outdoor focal point that unites medical, dental, nursing, optometry, and the allied health sciences into a truly interdisciplinary health sciences campus
