Clinical faculty (regardless of rank) - faculty positions within the university that are not tenure track and not eligible for tenure; on a fixed term contract.   Persons with the title of professor-clinical, associate professor-clinical, assistant professor-clinical and instructor-clinical. Duties and responsibilities are assigned in accordance with the workload guidelines laid out in the pattern of administration of each faculty department and, as appropriate, regional campus; Clinical faculty are teacher/practitioners and will be engaged primarily in teaching activities.  These faculty normally have earned doctorate or other terminal degree in the relevant field or equivalent experience.

The Department of Engineering Education (https://eed.osu.edu ) at The Ohio State University invite faculty applications for a regular, Assistant or Associate Practice Faculty appointment in the area of engineering education. 

Position Overview

We invite applications for faculty positions to start August 2024 or August 2025. Professional practice faculty will be asked to seek outside funding to support their overall work, including scholarship or practice-related activities in the classroom (e.g., sponsored student class projects). Qualified candidates will have significant prior teaching experience, demonstrated academic service and leadership, and evidence of formal scholarly activities.

Performance Objectives

Practice faculty are expected to contribute to the departmental mission through teaching, research, and service. This includes developing, enhancing, and teaching courses generally emphasizing engineering fundamentals, professional practice, engineering technical communication, and/or engineering education issues by incorporating practical, multidisciplinary education and/or design experiences; scholarship tied to expertise and experience either in the emerging academic field of engineering education or tied to industry experience; and providing high quality service to the department, college, university, and/or broader engineering education community.

Education and Experience Requirements

Required :

  • M.S. in engineering, engineering education, or equivalent STEM field from an accredited institution of higher education
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience as a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer OR past service in an official capacity as an academic leader
  • Expertise and experience in engineering education or engineering professional practice (e.g., industry experience)
  • Experience using and commitment to evidence-based practices in higher education settings
  • Record of excellent teaching ability
  • Demonstrated leadership
  • Evidence of engagement in formal scholarly activities
  • Demonstrated commitment to Ohio State’s Shared Values

Desired :

  • Ph.D. in engineering, engineering education, or equivalent STEM field from an accredited institution of higher education
  • Potential of securing external funding to support scholarship and/or student projects
  • Interest in contributing to the scholarship of teaching and learning
  • Professional service that has contributed to engineering education
  • Evidence of successful collaboration with others, including but not limited to staff, students, instructors, and faculty members from different disciplines
  • Interest in actively engaging with other College of Engineering departments and colleges across The Ohio State University

Department Information

The Department of Engineering Education (EED) is located within the College of Engineering at The Ohio State University. The EED’s mission includes advancing the engineering profession and enabling student success by:

  • Conducting and propagating world-class scholarship in engineering education
  • Modeling and advocating scholarly, evidence-based teaching within the College of Engineering
  • Developing and delivering state-of-the-art, innovative, multidisciplinary courses and programs in first-year engineering, engineering technical communication, multidisciplinary capstone design, and graduate education in engineering education.

The EED was created in November 2015 and the Ph.D. program was approved in Spring 2018. In Autumn 2023, approximately 25 graduate students will be enrolled in the engineering education doctoral program. Looking towards the future, the EED is positioned to grow and establish stronger connections across the College of Engineering and the field.
