GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Department of Biology welcomes applications for an Assistant Professor in Biology, specializing in areas of Environmental Science, Evolutionary Biology, and/or Ecology. This position will start in Fall 2024. We are looking for someone to help explore and design a broader program in such fields as environmental science and policy, biomedical sciences and engineering, or food science and safety. The standard teaching load for this position is 2 courses per year for the first two years and then three courses per year thereafter for research active faculty.
Qualified candidates will have a Ph.D. in biology or related field and two years of post-graduate research experience (such as post-doctoral training, government, or industrial research).
Situated within the Lewis College of Science and Letters, the Department has 14 full-time faculty members that possess expertise across the full spectrum of biological sciences in molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, physiology, nanoscience, and biophysics. The mission of the department is to provide academic, educational, and research programs that foster creativity, integrity, teamwork, leadership, and ultimately personal and professional success for undergraduate and graduate students. The department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in biology. In addition, the department hosts pre-professional students who are interested in pursuing health-related careers (e.g., medicine, veterinary medicine, dental science, physician assistant). The department is also part of a newly developed university research center in Fulton Market Wet Labs that will be live in 2024, a deep collaboration with IIT Research Institute (IITRI) and the Institute for Food Safety and Health (IFSH), and we are part of a greater Chicago-area biotech and healthcare industry.

  • Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses
  • Ability to conduct independent research and to secure extramural funding
